Kill me.

See, the horrible thing is, that I really want to go.

It'll be 4 hours long, at a bar/steakhouse. Open bar. My company (40ish employees), and three other companies (Whom we do not know and have never heard of before) will be sharing one large room. Buffet included.

I'm not of legal drinking age -- but I don't think they'd check. They would probably just assume everyone is.

I really like the people that I work with, they are just cool. But a party. At a place. With people I don't know, and I can't bring anyone. Drinks or not -- it's just murder.

It would probably be fun too...

Anyone else want to complain about office holiday events? We can all mope together

Ugh, I hate holiday parties, and holidays in general (except for Halloween!).

My work christmas party is coming up soon.. It's an all day event, 10am till 730pm minimum attendance! We are taking a bus to some remote rural area for a horse racing event.. There will be about 50 people there from our work. I don't know half of them, the ones I do know I get along well with during work, but when it comes to anything other than work, I'm a nightmare for them to be around. I'm anxious already. At least the alcohol will be FREE all day... I'm not much of a drinker these days though, I don't like the effects of binge drinking.

Well whatever your reasons -- alcohol & horses is either hilarious or deadly :D

I just don't understand what I'm expected to do. There is a signup list -- so I didn't write my name down (... yet?) for the party. A coworker that I am friendly & feel comfortable with was like "Why are you not going?" And it's kind of hard to explain. I don't want to be like... Well I don't feel like I should have to explain. I understand that she is curious, but. Telling someone you'd probably end up in the corner of the room either rocking or pacing isn't really that normal of a reason (Though I Would be playing with my phone at the same time, so I look more acceptable)

The way I see it, you need to make an effort and attend the party. I know it's hard, but some occasions just call for it, just to maintain those friendships.

I went to my sisters surprise engagement party last night. I was dreading it. But not going would have been much worse. The whole time I was at the party I wanted to leave. I found myself outside smoking quite alot, which is what I do when I feel awkward in a social situation.

But I think you should still go.

I wish I was a smoker. Not really and yet really, all at the same time. Social escape excuse and also a good way to work up conversation with moderately interesting people.

Taking up smoking when I was 15 changed my life, for good and bad reasons... Smoking brought me into a different social group at school. I wasnt fitting in to my old group at that time... There was a whole butterfly effect that I believe started from smoking. I believe it led to my first girlfriend, she wasn't a smoker, but we met through a smoker friend of mine, that girlfriend influenced my decision to defer uni for 12 months. In which time I decided to do another uni course, so I could be closer to her. Then we broke up a couple of years later and I went through an emotional roller coaster which caused me to struggle at uni, so I decided I needed a new outlook on life and quit uni and started my plumbing apprenticeship. Which is where I am now.

But smoking is also killing me :( I smoke about 25 - 30 cigarettes a day, or 50 in one night if I'm at a party or something. Which is way too much. I cough up crap in the morning, my breathing capacity is reduced and some days I get very puffed at work. So I think it might be time to quit.

I know I should. And people are already starting to ask questions. Ugh. Well I have a couple more days to decide (signup ends 12/14)

Here's the best thing I like about work Christmas parties...

I work, they party, I get left-over food brought to me! :D

We just had our big hospital party last night... I worked! YAY!

Actually, this was a combo party for our two hospitals in this county.
The party is usually catered and has VERY nice food!

After the party people eat, the caterer brings over a crapload of food for those poor souls, like me :P , who just couldn't make the party.

I actually wound up with the leftovers because they have to be thrown away otherwise.
I dropped off a big pan of pork slices with cranberry sauce and some very nice green beans to a family I thought could use some extra food.

We have our little department party sometime next week.
I went ahead and drew a name for the gift exchange. I'm seeing it as just a day to exchange a gift and nothing to do with Christmas.
I also got the name of someone I like very much so that makes it better/easier.
We put our names on a list and put what we wanted that doesn't cost over $20.

I put FUD (food) for mine just to make it easy.

I still need to find out what day and time our party is (usually a lunch sort of thing) so I can plan on getting there late.

I have missed most of them over the past 5 years.

it's free food, and they'll be drinking. You don't have to deconstruct War and Peace, a few banalities, and some 'loaded questions' (ask mothers about their family, or kids...sit back, and nod at appropriate times...;)

Also, you can always be eating something when someone you're not comfortable with comes up. I fake being a 'good listener' at occasions like this...;)

Or you could take a book to read if it all gets too boring.

I just went to a holiday party for people with AS and autism. It was nice. Lots of food.

I'm planning to go to my office's holiday party, at the director's home, just for the purpose of being annoying.

Now that I'm on anti-anxiety medicine, I'm feeling much braver. What could be worse than an Aspie weirdo who no longer has social anxiety?

Anti-anxiety medication will often help and it is worth discussing with your doctor.
