I just started a new job with a small software company, and a co-worker of mine shows some signs of classic autism (not AS). Every day so far, my boss yells at him about every aspect of his job, alway following it with 'Do you understand?'. Loud and rude yelling seems to be the way my boss treats the guy, even if he hasn't done anything wrong (for example, today my boss was yelling at him to explain a part of their software to me).

He also seems to single the guy out about everything that goes wrong with the company's operation. The software engineers have loads of bugs to deal with, and I haven't heard him go off on any of them like that.

It's downright concerning to hear my boss talk like that, especially considering that I might get the same treatment if he finds out that I have asperger's.

Please speak for your co-worker. This is discrimatory behavior, perhaps abuse. Can you report this anonymously? Anyway, do say something or else you're condoning the bias too. If you were treated in this way, wouldn't you need/want one to stand up for you? I do not mean to be harsh with you (I know this is not your fault, of course), but please do not let another Autie be hurt by this bigotry. I assure you, your autistic co-worker feels the hurt acutely. Watch out for each other. No one else will.

Of course, be respectful to your boss - you do not need to lose your job, or your co-worker's, but do act on this behavior! Can you report this to the ADA or Human Rights Commission, at least? Just a suggestion. In the long run, you'll be doing the right thing. Please consider.

You might try reporting your boss to his one-up. That "management style" is evil. Here is a vocabulary selection I cut-and-pasted from the thesaurus (extra-pedantic words edited out)
Unfair, unjust, unwarranted, unmerited, undue, unreasonable, excessive, undeserved.
Does it appear that your boss simply does not like your coworker? There was a recent thread on that particular topic that you might find to be relevant.

I agree with the others posted here...report your boss to some higher level person of authority. It's discrimination, it's morally wrong AND illegal!
I bet that you co-worker does not like to be yelled at even though he may not show it...no one likes to be yelled at. As long as your boss is still the boss, I wouldn't tell him about your AS. He doesn't sound like someone who needs, or even deserves to know.

take a camera and record your boss.
talk to your co-worker and tell him that if he doesn't stand up for himself, all his boss do is your co-worker's fault.

The boss is also the CEO, so there isn't a higher authority to talk to, within the company.
I'll do a bit of investigation as to why it's going on, as well as ask the coworker why he doesn't speak up about it (he just takes the yelling).

I've had a simply miserable first week, and I'm thinking about reposting my resume. It feels kinda crappy to start looking for a new job in the first week (especially since they paid relocation), but their product is really poor, the environment is antagonistic, the pay is low (for the area), and the hours are long.

I'll just the job off of my resume. It'll probably be a few months before I find something better anyway.

Gah. I never would have taken the job if it weren't for the post-college desperation for any job at all.

Though I turned down a much better job because it was in Wisconsin, and I knew that I couldn't handle the cold (or lack of mountains).

Keep looking for a better position and get out of there ASAP. Toxic atmospheres are bad for your health, wealth and sanity. I have stood up to bully bosses in the past and have never regretted it. But I have usually had a new role before I read them the riot act on employee rights and psychopathic behaviour. Life is too short to deal with a**holes.

*pointless rant*

I just got my first pay check, and the gross amount is 10% less than what it should be, given the salary they quoted before I started (based on 3 working days within the last pay period). I don't dare bring it up yet since I just started (I'll wait to see what the next one is), but since they lied about the hours, it wouldn't surprise me if they lied about the pay too.

write a letter to his boss, detailing all the abuse.
