I just moved into a new office about a week ago. I was in my old office for about a year. My old office was fairly large and was at the end of a long corridor, so it was very quiet, even though I was somewhat isolated. My new office is much smaller, really cramped, and its in the middle of a corridor,so i get people walking past all the time, usually talking loudly. Needless to say, this drives me nuts. On the plus side, my new office does have window with a nice view. Can't ask to be moved back into my old office cos new workers are going in there. The only other alternative was an office with no window, and I'm not going in there. :?

I'd welcome any thoughts or suggestions anyone has for making this transition a bit less uncomfortable.

Have you thought about either playing some soft music that you like (get a radio or play pandoras internet radio), or use a noisemaker with some white noise. I am not sure if the additional sounds would intensify the experience for you, but if the sound is closer and more enjoyable to you, it may serve to make the hallway sounds less immediate/jarring.

Depending on how small the office is and company regulations you could consider putting up a partition or cubicle wall on the other side of your desk. People would have to walk around the thing to get to your desk. Also be done with taller file cabinets.

If you can re-arrange you could try a different angle with less of a view to the hall, that might be less distracting. A small burbling fountain in the corner, water soothes me.
