Help?!?
OddFiction - you're too cute
Tracker - you've made me cry! That's been my point with the school, doctors and counselors but you stated it so much more eloquently! Thank you so much!
I live in Ontario and the school tells me that 'typically' they do not do IEPs before grade 3. I've called BS on that. I've been very disappointed as of late with his school. They have always understood that Matt plays to the beat of his own drum and have never really 'held it against him' before this diagnosis of ADHD/ODD. I'm finding that things are changing. I do have to say that I am SO thankful for one of the EAs at the school. Our lives would be dramatically different without him. He has NEVER looked at my son as a 'bad kid' - he's always praising his accomplishments and picks him up and helps to brush him off when he falls. He does hold Matt accountable for his actions but the consequences are always realistic. He's been Matt's personal cheerleader, confidant, and mentor for his whole school life. I wish more people in the school system were like him.
I can't begin to thank you all enough for all the encouragement. I have suspected AS for a long time and it's always 'wait until he's older because we can't assess that now' or 'next year we can do that' kind of answers from everyone I have involved.
I love my son. I wouldn't change a thing about who he is. Some of the behaviours could improve (and are improving). I'm proud of him no matter the letters associated with him
I tell him all the time that he is my masterpiece! It's so reassuring to know that so many people are out there that understand and function so well. It gives me so much hope! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

On that first paragraph ... I've said that to people, simply because in the toddler and preschool years it IS hard to be conclusive on most high spectrum kids. But ... that time is over. He can and should be assessed now that he is in school.
My son was diagnosed at 7, which was probably the right time for us. Before that there would always have been that "maybe it's just a developmental delay" layer. At 7, it became really clear.
