Initially, the diagnosis is sad and stressful. After a while, you realize that your kid is still your kid. I like my son the way he is...not that it's easy, but I don't feel desperate about it. I'm hopeful about the future.

Subaru, i'm an 28 yr old with aspergers a long with a bunch of other diagnoses which equals the aspie label. Do not give up on your child, I can say for a fact your child needs your love and support right now and you need to keep strong. your child is lucky that the doctor thinks he may have aspergers but can't diagnose it. There is a reason for this as well as alot of doctors have no clue what aspergers is. I have lived with it for my whole life, 28 yrs. Funny thing is when I was growing up and in school there was no such thing as aspergers or autism. I just found out about it 2 yrs ago when I first got on SSD and had a evaluation done.

I was first diagnosed with a learning disorder and mild depression at a early age (i lost both my parents and was adopted) but guess what I did rather well in school, 3.8 GPA in high school, A 3 yr job in the grocery industry (which is the worse job you can have being on the spectrum) which since aspergers didn't exist for that long I had the diagnoses of the following which adds up to Aspergers and it's cause of distress and overworking in the job industry as well as traumatic events I have got the following diagnoses + alot more: Somatization Disorder,Generalized Anxiety Disorder,Major Depressive Disorder,Posttaumatic stress disorder
Schizophrenia (undifferentiated Type),Social Phobia,Cognitive Disorder,NOS,Personality Disorder,Visual impairment
Significiant sensory-motor Integration Delay, Hearing loss in left ear and mild sensorial loss in right ear, Disc disorder, intervertebral, lumbar, spinal problems.

I would go and send your child to see both physcologist and a Psychiatrist as your chances are much better.

I think the main hardship is not the label of Aspergers or Autism but the ignorance and the treatment of our country (job industry, educational industry and the lack of support for those who are going though traumatic events that led to alot of the diagnoses, as I lost 4 of my family members and almost couple more. thoughout my life. I had a pretty decent child hood despite the distress of adoption and losing my mother, but the last 8 years has pretty much been the hardest for me, My system just crashed to the state that I'm on disability most likely forever.

I also did self employment in my past and become extremely wealthy but thanks to my hard life I lost everything I worked so hard for... Alot of research on autism aspergers/adhd points to genetics, stress related issues (PTSD) as of right now.

Your child should be pretty much fine, when they turn Adult it's gonna be the hardest, you really need to help them with there career and enjoyment well in high school. Well everyone says get a good paying job after school, but that is BS unless you enjoy what your career is, My life went by so quickly I couldn't find a career to go into.. except self employment which worked out great for a while.

it's ok to feel shocked, saddened, depressed over your child's diagnosis. many of us have felt this at one time or another. if the depression continues past a few weeks, though, you should really consider seeking out professional help.

it was, and still is, difficult for me to deal with all my emotions surrounding my son's and husband's dx of Aspergers. On one hand, I am relieved that there is a name for what they deal with. On the other hand, though, I am saddened by things that they feel they cannot do .....I went on a week-long cruise last week with friends. It was crowded and loud. For me, it was a great amount of fun! I had such a wonderful time!....I was sad, though, that this is something my husband and son would not enjoy.

life is a rollercoaster. enjoy the ride.
