I didn't really like kids until I got pregnant. I wasn't even sure I ever wanted my own at any point in my life. I soon found out I was having one after a special potion of an alcoholic liquid on a frequent basis! I was terrified, even more so because I was so young, only 14. She absolutely terrified me to start with, and I think I may have even had postnatal depression after she was born because although she filled up a huge gap, at the same time I looked at her and I thought I'd made a huge mistake. But those feelings have passed now and I have 2 of them.

Being a mum gives me a reason to see the brighter side of life, even when things are really tough. It's sure as hell really difficult and demanding, my 3 year old daughter has severe autism but even if I could go back, I wouldn't trade her for the world. I genuinely hope my 4 month old daughter doesn't have autism though, it's not a nice thing to have, even if you're fully able to do many things. Children are the meaning of real and unconditional love. You have them for life, but they're not like a friendship or a relationship. Nobody knows how to be a parent, you just have to do the best you can.

Oh, and I don't think it's selfish not to want children. I'm not a Christian, nor do I follow any specific organised religion. I don't think God would mind either way, we were given free will for a reason. We all need to be grateful for our lives, and do what makes us happy as long as we're not hurting others. I think that you should keep your options open because a lot of the reasons you list do seem to be worries, rather than reality. But nobody is forcing you to have children and if you geniunely believe that you would make a bad parent, don't procreate.

I hope this answer isn't too preachy, it really isn't intended to be. :?
