auditory processing disorder
Hi,
My son is 3.5 years old, is in speech, making dramatic strides. Still has some echolalic speech, (he is learning social phrases and using them correctly, only uses stuff he hears us say, not from the TV or anything) and seems to be branching out from there. He had no delay in speech initially but from age 2.5yrs to age 3, we saw no real progress so we went to speech privately. He was found to have negative ear pressure throughout the time of no real progress and also severe allergies to mold and dust. We have a great hold on that now and of course he's making great progress, but our speech therapist feels he has auditory processing issues, (possibly caused by the negative pressure for so long, but of course can't be 100% sure.)
Does anyone know how or why the echolalic speech and the branching out from there goes along with APD? He is also very hyper-can't sit still for nothing-has a hard time making it through a meal of any sort-doesn't even watch cartoons for very long-to this day I don't think he's set and watched a whole kid's movie, or an episode of Spongebob even! He loves music LOUD, and really likes walkmans and CD's to the radio. Anyone with insight to this in children please advise! His receptive score as of most recent was 105 and his expressive score was 103-all done on a preschool aged speech therapy test for kids ages 3-7. He is also not big on sharing information but will answer you correctly if you ask, and he is also what I call the "opposite" kid. If you say, "Hey, B, the sky is blue!" He would say, "hey, momma, the sky is black!" or something like that and giggle, giggle, giggle. I would say he actually does have quite a sense of humor as he jokes with his opposites all the time!
Please advise. I have read all the websites but really not sure the early signs of APD or what to expect b/c most of it's geared towards the school aged group!
I also wonder if it could be mild Asperger's?
Thanks!

don't know much about APD, but there is another post from a week or so ago that was about APD and CPD( Central Processing Disorder )...the post had links to more information on both of these.........i think the post was in either the general discussion or members only discussion.
