Butting heads with school psychiatrist.
I have to go to a meeting next week concerning my daughter and I know the school psychiatrist I always but heads with will be there. Why is it that she thinks that just because my daughter has asp. that she shouldn't want to have friends. She makes a big deal out of this and says she doesn't think she really is because she has seen her with other kids and thinks she is just acting bad. I have tried and tried to say it's not that she doesn't want to have friends or be social, she just always seems to be inappropriate about it. Or she also says that because she isn't gifted in a certain subject, but that she is just average, she can't be.
i work in a special ed setting with plenty of social workers and school psychologists.....i, too, had problems with the school psychologist from my son's school....i asked my coworkers if there was something i was missing~ was i explaining things incorrectly ? .........their reply ???
"regular ed. school psychologists are morons....they haven't had enough practice with a specialized population to realize that things which they perceive as problems are not that great of a problem when looked through a more therapeutic eye."

I agree with that. I never had experience with these so called "school counselors" until I was in 8th grade. I tend to think school counselor jobs are created just to give someone who can't do much else a paycheck.
I had to deal with my high school counselor when she tried to pressure me to allow myself to be humiliated by senior students during freshman hell week. I thought she was a complete buffoon telling me I had to allow myself to be degraded or I would suffer and the same thing would happen to me once I got to college.
She was only the second school counselor I ever had to deal with. The first one was in 8th grade and she was a complete waste of space just like my high school counselor was.

is you daughter diagnosed? If so petition the school to no longer have her deal with you or your daughter, tell them you feel that she is being innapropriate and overstepping her bounds. Threaten to bring it to the school board and them should make her stay out of it.

I hate hearing, "you don't seem autistic/aspie". I have a nagging suspicion most people have no idea what autistic or aspie "seem" like in the first place...
A school psychologist, in most states, have to meet way fewer requirements that a regular psychologist. In New york state they don't even need a degree in psychology! I had some real problems with one in my son's school and that is exactly what the state board of education told me!
The one we had caused extreme damage to my son's well being as a result of her ignorance. After long talks with the superintendent and board, she wasn't fired, but her tenure wasn't given, and she had to move onto another unsuspecting school district. Shame.

That doesn't surprise me at all. School definitely isn't run like the real world. I said it before and I'll say it again, school counselor/psychologist jobs are just created to give useless people a paycheck.
I have had a total of 4 run ins with 2 school counselors in my life, which didn't help me much. The first was in 8th grade, when a teacher saw constantly being tormented by a group of kids I was sent to the counselor. I told her what was going on and she talked to all the kids who were doing it and nothing changed.
The second was that same year with that same counselor when I got into an arguement with a female student and cursed her out. The girl told the teacher and we got sent to the counselor ot cool off. I got lectured about using certain words towards members of the opposite sex and nothing was said to the girl who started the arguement by making a negative comment about me.
In grade 9, I had to run ins with a different counselor. The first one was over hazing, when I refused to be hazed by senior students. I was told by her life there would be hard for me if I didn't allow these people to degrade and humiliate me for their own entertainment. I refused to do it and of course was tormented for that reason and others.
The second run in with her was when I got into a shouting match with a bunch of students, male and female, in my own grade and someone went and got the counselor and she talked to me for a little bit and I cooled down. I didn't get anything out of it of course, since she was an idiot just like the 8th grade counselor.
My opinion was, and still is, the school counselors are pretty much worthless idiots.

When I was in seventh grade, the school counselor responded to instances of physical bullying and sexual harassment from a group of about five boys in addition to constant insults by:
- lecturing me on missing class
telling me to ignore them
telling me it wouldn't have happened in the first place if I didn't act oddly
Now, she's the principal of an elementary school, and I cringe every time I think of it.

That is how my parents treated me, mostly the last 2 since I rarely missed class. The closest thing that I heard from a counselor was in high school when I refused to be initiated being told I better do it or I would suffer. That counselor also became principal of that school and it really makes me cringe as well.
Sounds like you had a similar problem to me. I found school officials in general didn't understand that male and female students could have conflicts with each other. I had conflicts with both male and female students and they couldn't seem to deal with it when the conflict was with someone of the other gender. I never quite understood this. They seemed to think because I was the male having a conflict with a female that I was automatically the one with the problem.
Of course, they didn't do much for my conflicts with male students either, but they seemed to do even less when I had a conflict with a female student.

Don't E.V.E.R rely on school counselors/psychologists. Everybody assumed that I was having trouble with schoolwork when I was just lazy. The school assumed that I skipped alot of homework assignments because I was always uninformed, from not paying attention, or misinformed when the real reason was that I just didn't care. A speech therapist assumed that I was depressed because I was quiet, even though she would have known very well why she was assigning to meet with me once a week.
But then again, you would be suprised how many horribly idiotic assumptions people make about why aspies/autistics make their certain behaviors even if they, themselves, tell you exactly why.
Pardon me, but did your daughter actually tell you that she wants to make friends?
Or is it your assumptions vs. the psych's assumptions?
From the psychiatrists I've met (and heard about) I've noticed that they think they know what they're talking about but when it comes down to it they really don't have a good deal of personal experience with people on the Autistic Spectrum. Most psychiatrists don't ever see any autties, and the ones that do, they hardly spend any time with them (similar to all patients of course-- in and out) since it's mainly the psychiatrist's job to give medications and only ask the questions which are pertinent to give the "correct" medication.
They don't go in depth. And most of my psychiatrists (I have no doubt) had to look up my name on my chart before each meeting so they'd know what to call me.
Kinda sad. But just KEEP butting heads with that psychiatrist. You know your child better than she does. Remember that. You're the expert on your child.
