Hi there,

I know it is pretty routine for you guys in the US to have the chickenpox vaccine, so I guessed you could answer my questions.

In our country it is not commonly given to children as the chickenpox is considered a mild illness. But my ds (AS) 4.5yrs is a 'picker'! !! and I worry that if he does indeed get chickenpox, that he will pick his skin to pieces.

So I have ordered the vaccine in privately, and the doctor will do the vaccine for me. I would just like to know if your kids had any side effects, or passed chickenpox to anyone else from the vaccine? Is it even a good idea to get the vaccine?

Thanks for taking the time to read xx

Picken' scabs topic

I was a picker. There was no vaccine when i got this childhood disease. I am lucky I do not scar easily.

This vaccine came out just a few months after my youngest (NT) children contracted the pox. There have been studies that strongly point to a greater incidence of shingles as a senior if the person had chicken pox as a child. Shingles is nasty, and can threaten weakened immune systems. I am almost at the age when it strikes.

Fortunately there is now a vaccine for seniors that will eliminate reduce the treat of shingles, whether the person had chicken pox as a child or not. My oldest daughter is thankful for this, and it will benefit my two youngest as well. I am going to investigate this. :D

As long as your child has no allergies to the contents of the vaccine, you can consider it. (I am not legally or medically qualified to dispense advice, I might add.) Check with your health care provider for the best options for you and your child.

Good luck.

Both my boys had the shot and it did them no harm but they also got chicken poxs a few years after. A very mild case for both boys so moral of the story they need a boster about a year or so after the frist shot and you should be ok.

Thanks guys for your replies. I was told he would have to have two shots at least 4 weeks apart for full imunity.

I think I will go ahead with it, its hard putting him through the vaccination part though, he is so good at the doctors and trusts him. Really hope I dont blow it altogether.

But I hope this far outweighs him picking himself away :? xx

Both of my children have had to get the chicken pox vaccine, as the local school district requires it. Neither has yet suffered any ill effects - remember that this is mere anecdotal evidence, thus not really evidence, but it's all I have to offer. :)

Get the vaccine. Any person regardless of age who hasn't had the chickenpox should be vaccinated because although chickenpox is mild, the vaccine will prevent shingles later in life. This is a more significant consideration than preventing an itchy illness that lasts a week or so. If you've had chickenpox, you'll need the vaccine, too when you're 50 years old or so because about 50% of people get attacks from the dormant virus when their immune systems lose memory of the decades-old infection if they don't get vaccinated.

Chicken Pox vaccine? What a f-ing joke. That's like a cold or flu vaccine - just suck it up and deal with it.

I did not get vaccinated when I was a child and I got chicken pox when I was 25. I had shingles and it was extremely painful. Also, when you get chicken pox as an adult you can end up with respiratory problems that can cause you to become very ill, and possibly die depending on your overall health. When I got it I was strongly urged by my physican to go directly to the hospital at the first sign of any respiratory symptoms.

As a child, chicken pox isn't that big of a deal, as an adult it can be very nasty.

I did not get vaccinated for Chickenpox, as I live in Canada and no vaccine was available at the time.

I got it twice. Once as a baby, and once as a teenager in high school. The high school case was horrible. I've got some scars reappearing in my face from it. I'll probably get shingles later.

My advice, get the kid vaccinated. Chickenpox is NOT fun and you want to reduce the chances of the kid getting shingles later in life and shingles are even LESS fun.
