Question to the parents- Thank you!
I asked a question in one of forums but I thought to come here since this is where most of the parents are. My mom has no idea about Aspergers Syndrome that much, since my diagnoses. She was joking around with my doctor about me being obsessed with bounce balls and I dream about it, and can't stop asking my grandma to buy me some. So she joked would be her being obsessed about it be with Aspergers. My doctor said actually yes it is, they have interests that could become obsessions. Yes but my mom said when we got in the car I am going to ask her next time we go back there that since you have it should you turn it off when you notice you are doing it or just do it? She doesn't mean harm and wants to learn more but she thinks that. I was wondering if you (parents) thought that and what should I say to my mom. I would like your opinions.
Thank you.

I think your mother is trying to understand the best way for you to deal with your obsessions. She would like to ask the doctor if it is best for her, as a parent, to try to encourage you to push the obsession out of your mind, or to let you indulge in it.
Give your mom credit for trying. Also, give her some credit for asking your doctor (supposedly an expert) for advice. You might want to suggest that she join WP.
Is she asking if you can turn off your obsessions ?
Dont mean to offend anyone but I just call mine obsessions.
Its good that you understand that your Mom is not really trying to be mean by teasing you and I also know its hard to express your feelings but If it bothers you that she makes fun of you, its ok to let her know. Its hard when people tease you about things that are really important to you, I know! And no you cant really "turn off" your obsessions but you can, if you work really hard at it, kind of close it off when you need to focus on something else. I sometimes imagine a chest in my head (Im very visual) and I put it in there and lock it up. This doesnt always work.....sometimes it escapes
...but its an idea you can try anyway.
Good luck and dont let the neurotypicals get you down, they just dont understand. Since my diagnosis and my kids I feel like its my job to educate people and when ever an opportunity arises, like a good Aspie, I run off at the mouth about it.
If bounce balls help you relax then I think they could be a good thing. If you are constantly asking your mom for them, then I suggest you stop doing that. She knows you like and want them. Asking the same questions repeatedly is extremely annoying and that is a habit you should definitely break.
I've got an Aspie friend who always goes to a special chair and has a glass of very cold milk after she's been around people. It's her own special ritual that helps her recharge herself and stay balanced. If fidgeting a bounce ball or playing with one helps you that way then I say go for it but try not to talk a lot about it to others (not because it's embarassing, because repitition is annoying).
In the other forum you didn't say what your obsession was when you asked about it. I answered differently saying you could think of ways to make a career out of it. That may not work for bounce balls, or maybe it could.
Actually my doctor is an expert for it for the fact she is an Aspie too.
I do give my mom credit for trying. And not shunning the diagnoses off or whatever she may do. She wants to learn more. My mom never goes online, but I will give her the website to check out see if she might want to sign up.
I am sorry I couldn't explain it well. She wants to understand. If its a type of thing you should trying to get my mom off the obsession or let me have it. I think because I been in therapy, and I used to cut, and so I worked a way of not thinking of cutting with my therapist. So I think her mind set is that. Maybe I can do something that simple to get rid of my obsession.
The only time I get upset with her is when I am really excited about something I read to share with her, and she bluntly says I don't care about this can you stop talking about it.
I am very visual too Liloleme. I like my obsessions though. I mean sometimes if I am online for hours and then I stop and I realize I been reading about something for 5 hours. I sometimes either make myself go to sleep or do something else. But I don't want it to stop.. Without them I have nothing I am interested in.
Kiley. I like getting new bounce balls or just balls every once in awhile. But I don't constantly ask. Just this special time I know I missed the oppurtinty to get one from the machine and because I don't live by the mall but my grandparents do I asked them. Yeah, know for sure I don't talk about it. I just like to buy lots of bounce balls, play with them and such thats all. And actually for a career out of it, I want to own a toy store. So it could work.
Thanks everyone for answering.
