Question regarding Developmental Pediatricians.

How are visits to them like? I heard they take hours? I'm writing a story about a couple, with a child, the mother thinks has PDD, though the Ped Dev, diagnosis the kid as having a developmental delay(the mom disagress while dad agrees). Thanx!:)

Whenever my daughter has gone to one, the appointment has only taken an hour. It usually takes 2 or 3 appointments before a diagnosis is made.

We have only gone to one for our son's diagnosis. Before the appointment, we filled out stacks of questionnaire's about our son's development and behavior. When we went for the actual appointment, we were only there about 1.5 hours. Our son was diagnosed as PDD_NOS/possible Asperger's. He was only 2.5 yrs old. He is 5 now, and the diagnosis still fits.......

When we took my son it's about 1.5 hours, because before the appt. they sent us paperwork to fill-out and sent back, they also made us submit a copy of his current iep etc.so the Dev. already has an idea on what is going on, then on the day of the appt. he just re-confirm everything, and wrote us a report, I can't believe that ebverything that we told him was on that report, it was amazing, 'cause we thought he's only partly listening. My ds was 5, and we already know that he might be an aspie, we just needed the dx so the school will have no problemgiving him the services. He was dx with ASD at our children's hospital, and PDD-NOS by our Psychologist.

We were referred to one when my dd was 4 and waited nine months for the appointment. The initial appt was very thorough, with a phone interview preceding that appt. I think the initial appt was 1.5-2 hours and a follow up visit contained the ADOS which was another hour or so. My daughter was not diagnosed with AS at that time but with Dyspraxia and Anxiety Disorder. I don't think the AS was as clearly apparent then as it was when she was diagnosed just before she turned 6. We see her twice a year for "issues" and to track Dev progress.

New to forum so sorry - but not sure if this should of been a new post or not.. Either way ---

When is a developmental pediatrician really necessary? One of my 12 yr old twin boys was dx'd asperger's at the age of 9 (several dx's from different docs - pediatriation, therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist etc + plus school agrees with the dx). His therapist mentioned getting an appointment with a DP -- I really do not see the need now that he is almost 13 and everything seems to be in place with therapy etc.

Should I continue to disregard a DP (since they seem so long to get an appt for anyway), or would a DP offer more for my ds.
