There is a thread on how many misdiagnoses before the AS diagnosis that wasn't too long ago.

My son was misdiagnosed by three before the fourth gave the right diagnosis.

I don't think my son has ever gotten one, unless you count the original auditory processing disorder diagnosis that missed his autism.

At the center where we've just started treatment, our social worker discussed the different tools used for diagnosis of spectrum disorders. She made a point to note that the two tools that she considered the gold standard, the ADOS and the ADIR, both depend on the observational skills of the person administering it, on how they judge what they are seeing, and on how the patient happens to respond that day - there is a lot of room for interpretation.
