I was a hero in an emergency situation. I am 26 and could have Aspergers or ADD but maybe I don't. I was with my mother and I saw there was a fire and we were outside.

I told my mom that I think one of us should pull the fire alarm is it wasn't going off. My mom said you can pull the fire alarm since you asked me. So my mom goes with me and watches me kick the glass and pull the handle. I was glad that my Mom was with me because the handle would not stay down so she pulled it down with me and it still did not work. I wondered why the handle would mot stay down. Did I not follow the directions or did I not pull it right?

So we ran to another fire alarm and broke the glass and pulled the handle thank god this one worked. My Mom said good thinking with regards to going to another fire alarm.

Was it normal that my Mom was with me and she helped me even if I'm an adult? If it was your son would you let him pull the alarm if he asked Should I pull it if you were together? Was it normal for my Mom to pull the handle down with me as it did not work the first time? On the second alarm my Mom helped me kick the glass as there was no hammer so we each took turns kicking it. When it was time to pull the handle my mom said"Pull it all the way down and hold it until the alarm goes off" . How did my Mom know to hold the handle down until the handle locks down?

I felt like I was a hero and I was complimented for my quick thinking by the fire department. My Mom got me my favorite underwear as a result since I like wearing and collecting different colors/styles of Underwear. I guess its a weird gift for some but for me its something I enjoy and its not a dangerous or illegal gift. I wanted the Jockey Elance Bikini Underwear in colors so I guess I'm normal to want to wear this. It just so happened I had black underwear on lol but it helped me to remain calm.

In an emergency situation, there is no normal. I'm glad you were thinking quickly and that your mom and you were able to work together to resolve things as fast as possible.

Don't worry about normal. Don't over-analyze. Just be glad the right things happened.

You are a hero :)

A fire is a terribly scary thing for anyone. I hope my kids and I would do as well as you in that type of situation. You showed clear thinking during the emergency, and I'm sure your mom was glad she was not alone.

I wouldn't worry about this situation but look at your life in general. My son's theapist shows me how important it is that my son be as independent as possible. I should not hover or do things he should do. So you could look at the routines of your life and see if there are things your mom does for you that she shouldn't have to. Obviously, you can think very clearly. It would make more sense to work on those than to worry about the emergency situation. I'm sure your mom would really appreciate it!

Great job! :) It sounds completely appropriate to me, the way your mom assisted without taking over the task. It's great that the two of you could work together so well in an emergency situation.

I think it is completely normal to second guess yourself in an emergency situation that is so different from our normal experiences, so if there is someone else around to consult then you will normally ask them to see if it is the right thing to do to pull a fire handle for example. I can think of quite a few times where some similar things happened to me and I wasn't sure what to do particularly as doing something like setting an alarm off when maybe there wasn't a fire (such as you saw smoke and it turned out to be not a fire, maybe something like steam) is not a good thing to do.
Also I am 43 and have kids and a wife and still ask my Mum stuff.

BTW there is an underpants pole over here :D
