Middle School class periods

So, just out of curiosity (my son starts middle school next year) I looked up our Middle School's "bell schedule." The children have 10 40-minute periods EVERY DAY.

Seriously? Is this how middle school works everywhere? I can't keep 10 things I WANT to think about in my head during a day, much less 10 things I have to work at! I can't even imagine this being a good idea for NT kids.

Yep, typical. Middle school started in 5th grade here, and 90% of the kids couldn't handle it.

Ten? No, our middle school has 7, with one of those being lunch.

Are all ten mandatory or are some for optional electives? For example, our high schools both a "zero" and an "eighth" period, but most kids with a class in one of those will get another period off; the extra time option is just required to make the schedule for certain electives work. And maybe a few ambitious kids use it to triple up on electives ... Our middle school used to offer an elective "zero" period until budget cuts made it unaffordable.

Anyway, I would be surprised if that was ten mandatory, academic, periods. I think 6 or 7 is the norm.

Maybe it depends on your area... but where I'm from, every school I taught in in college had 9-10 periods, including the school I attended and all surrounding districts.

Middle school, Six periods - with an elective zero period.

In high school, they have found kids do better with longer classes so they do block scheduling, three longer periods per day and one study hall. We love the block scheduling and think its totally helpful. The only down side is when you have a boring teacher - that is o e long class!

I don't think they have study hall type-options until high school - what I have heard is that at least one of the middle schools combines periods in the bell schedule so the kids are in the same room for 80 or so minutes, but the bell still sounds in the middle of the period. It's not clear if that happens in my school.

mine has 7. 10 seems like a bad idea. i agree with you too many subjects.

Here we have 5th and 6th grade intermediate, run just like middle school. My son did not make it. He had to transfer to the behavior room and they are going to work on transitioning him back into mainstream one class at a time.

my high school had 11 or 12 periods but the most any one had in one day was 8 the avereage person had 7 the school was so overcrowded that there were shifts i forgot exactly who came in when but for example seniors and juinors started 1 st period of the day others came in starting 3 rd period some started 4th ect but most

do you live in a big city or an overcrowded area? maybe the middle school is in shifts like my high school was
