Can repeatedly opening your eyes really wide be a tic? My 12 year old son has been doing this lately. He has a history of transient tics, but they were more along the lines of shoulder shrugging and shuddering.

Yes. I did it with blinking when I was 9. It usually happens when thinking about the eye and its movements too much. Sometimes I now have trouble sleeping because if I start to worry if I'm breathing right, the pattern will no longer be involuntary. It's kind of along the same lines. Plus, preteen boys tend to do lots of weird facial expressions to begin with.
