When our son started nursery at 3 1/2, it was picked up by his teacher that he may have aspie, now he is four and we are going through the system, and we will soon be going to the speech therapist for a clinical diagnosis.
Has anybody else had such an experience with there son/daughter at such an early age?

I was diagnosed with autism when I was 2 and did the Lovaas programme to make me moe NT - after a year I could speak pretty well!

We found out that our son was "High-Functioning autism" at 2-1/2 years old. It took me almost 4 more years to convince the school system. You have an amazing story because somebody in the school system is already on your side!

What a success. The ball starts rolling now.

Daughter diagnosed with high functioning autism at 3 years, 11 months.

Son diagnosed at 23 months.

My daughter had the school system eval started today. She scored exceptionally high on cognitive/verbal, normal on motor. Now I guess we have more meetings. School psych and someone to assess her sensory problems. Whee! I hate dealing with these people.

my son was diagnosed shortly before his 4th birthday. but i had friends who knew their stuff, a speech pathologist who specialized in autism and another who was in an applied counselling course and has a sister working with adults with developmental difficulties etc. so things were pointed out to me, that and the fact that he knew his numbers to 100 before he turned 2.
just started jr.kind. is in the beginging stages of getting into programs etc.

my son (3 1/2) is in the evaluation process right now...I noticed some thinga that were a bit "off" about him and took him for the pre-K screening - he scored high normal but they noticed his language usage abnormalities and repetitions so we have to go have extra testing to to get the diagnosis itself. I understand that it is best to catch it at this early age, so that you can know what they need and ake sure they don't fall through the cracks. Good luck--I am crossing my fingers for all of us right now that we get good people who know their stuff.

siuan--I feel the same way about the people and the appointments. Oy.

My son was dx'd with PDD-NOS at 2 1/2. I knew something was wrong before that. He is almost 4 now. It will not become an aspie dx until he is older.

Is speech the only eval he is going to get? If you have a developmental pediatrician in your neighborhood, getting an eval from them can be very helpful, not only for you to tell you what you can do to help, but also to help you get services that your son needs.

Just to give you an idea of what services he may qualify for when you have his IEP meeting, if he is on the spectrum, my son gets:

From the school dist:
OT 2 hrs a week, one hour in class and one hour in gym
Adaptive PE 30 mins a week
Speech 30 mins a week- working on social language, conversation, pragmatics
Special ed preschool collaborative class, which mixes with a reg pre-Kinder class 2 1/2 hrs a day
Summer school
