Strattera and its effect on teenege girls monthly cicle
Hello all, this is my first post but I've been lurking for a while. My DD is 15 and has been diagnosed with ADHD at age 6, and finaly, with Aspergers, at age 12. As all of you know very well, it is an uphill battle. She started HS this year and I have met every teacher, dean, ap and guidance counselor in that school. It has been a very difficult year. My question is this: she was on Concerta for a few years and her doctor just added Strattera to the mix in December. I must say, I do see the results and they are very encouraging. However, she first got her period 1 year ago and as of September it has been pretty regular. However, she has not had one since we started her on Strattera in December, so 2 month exactly. I did make a doctors appt for her for next week to do blood tests, but was just wondering if anyone has encountered this situation. Also, I would love to chat with anyone whos sircumstances are similar. Thanks in advances for any responces. ![]()
Not sure, but Concerta could do that because stimulants suppress appetite. Cycle requires good diet.
Is the strattera actually working? I've not heard of anyone talk about it that favourably, didn't work with me. It basically famous only for being a failed anti-depressant.
Be careful with ADHD medication they can give you quite a bit of flase confidence about the future. ADHD medications have been investigated by leading neurologists/doctors, show on well known investigative programs like panorama. There is no evidence whatsoever of any long term benefit of using any on label or off label ADHD medication on the market. That is something that is required to justify their use in pervasive conditions, especially in children and young adults. I believe the UK regulator has changed its guidelines recently, and FDA may follow suit if they haven’t already. It should be a choice to take these drugs only for adult and not as a long term solution.
If it does works the most you got is around 10 years, though expect more like 5 if you are lucky. It will wear of and then the kid will be dropped in the sh** with no self help skills. It always wears off too.
She has been taling Concerta for a few years now and it was working for a while. However, the problem we encountered is that she is very thin, so that her Dr was very hesistant to increase the dosage that comparable to her age. She started her period a year ago (on Concerta) and it was fine. The change to no period for 2 month started when we added Strattera.
Strattera does work (in a way), she is not bouncing of the walls as much and is better able to comunicate socialy. Also, it seems like it helps her control her impulsivity a bit. Concerta, on the other hand, only seems helps with attention span and concentrating on a subject at hand.
I am very concerned on long term effects of the meds, but without them she can not function. So the question than is - give meds that seem to help and hope for the best or dont and watch my child be a miserable outcast who has no impulse control at all, cant stay in her seat (and she is in HS), curses like crazy (that little thing that makes us think before we speak is missing for her) etc.
I am just trying to make the best decisions for my child, so any insights you guys can offer, I would greatly appreciate.
