Help w/ child getting to wipe properly

My 6yr autistic nephew is having a little trouble in his dump-taking. Sometimes he'll get crap on his hands, the toilet seat, etc...

He doesn't have the verbal communication abilities to explain it in detail; he'll get down basic keywords like wipe, wash your hands, etc but I wouldn't know how to explain to him to wipe better.

Any ideas?

If he will let you, do it for him and talk him through it. Explain carefully WHY he is supposed to wipe. Over and over until he really is ready. But I'm not speaking from personal experience - my son has wiping issues, but not at the same level you describe. For a long time his only wiping was by "auto wipe" - the wiping that naturally happens from your underwear, as evidenced by the stains. He just stubbornly refused to do more. My threat was to do it for him - he was already 8 by that time and didn't want me to.

Maybe you could get a Children's book about how to use the potty. He knows how to read, correct? Here's a few books you and him may enjoy and may help.

The one above isn't really useful on helping a child learn how to wipe, but it's an amusing read, nonetheless.

Toilet paper should start putting instructions on the wrapper on how to wipe.
