Should I get a PS4 or a Wii U tomorrow?

My 21st birthday is tomorrow and I'm planning on getting a new console. I tried to reserve a used backwards compatible PS3, but I cancelled it because with used consoles...you never know

I'm trying to decide between a PS4 or a Wii U. There's more of a variety of games that I want for the Wii U. Hell, there's more of a variety in general! The only games I really want as of now for PS4 are Watch Dogs, Thief and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

The other thing is, is that I could care less about graphics for the most part and I've heard and read that the PS4 has had some difficulties like the blue light thing or whatever.

So based on what I mentioned about what I like about the Wii U and based on the game variety I would have between PS4 and Wii U which one should I buy tomorrow. I really want to buy a new console while I have the money...

Personally, I think you dodged a bullet on the backwards compatible PS3. I went through three of them before I just started using my PS2 again. The failure right on them is very high, like 360 RROD high.

I have a Wii U. There isn't much I play on it, but I only play really strange and niche things. Due to that, I mostly stick to handhelds anymore. The 3DS and Vita are both great. It sounds like you probably want the Wii U more though, and it's cheaper. There will finally be some good things coming out soon. And it makes for a great TV. I may rarely play it, but I do like to use it as a remote.

I'm just glad that I pressed cancel before the PS3 was finalized. I had already pressed the button to have it reserved so that was a close call

The Wii U has Call of Duty: Ghosts and Watch Dogs is apparently coming out for the Wii U so I truly have a better variety of games. I have a 3DS and it is a great handheld. To be honest, out of all the games I've played in my lifetime I've never met one that I didn't like. So if I stick to my plans as far as what to get for my birthday, I'm assuming that the Wii U is my best bet. Besides, that Winder Waker Wii U looks too good to be true

from what I've red the wii u version of games is a gimp version of the game on the other consoles. it is a far weaker system. which Nintendo acknowledged with their specs of the next system. if you like mario and zelda games, pretty much all you're get on wii u. then you're set. I personally don't like thos games. plus you get like two new games a year. right not the line up for the next gen consoles is low so not many games on the ps4, but getting last of us, and some others in december, plus destiny in the summer. then eventually fallout 4, elder scrolls, division, gta5, metal gear solid 5, red dead remdemtion 2 etc. none will come out on wii u. and in 3-4 years the new nitendo console may be out.

honestly though it comes down to what games you like. I love all the games above and never been a mario or zelda guy, so i went with the ps4 and vita. the ps4 wil get alot of AAA games the wiiu wont, but the wii you will get all the Nintendo 1st party game the other consoles won't. developers just don't make much money off of wii u games to devolope for it, watch dogs was almost canceled but instead delayed.

my sister on the other hand loves mario, so she has a 3ds. I grew up with sega then playstation. I only played a bit of mario on the NES and wii(which i bought just to have all the consoles lol) honestly i main issue with the wii u is it's price. its only $50 under the ps4 and xbox but half as powerful. what was so cool about the wii was it was $250 compared to the $500 of the others. or maybe i'd have a wii u. I am a tiny bit interested in the 3d mario where you have a cat suit, it seems to be little less platform. I dislike platform games on non handhelds.

but just look at the games out and coming out and decide which you think you're get more enjoyment out of. It's how i deicded between the ps4/xbox and the vita/3ds.

....failure rate on PS3 is high? I've never once seen one go bad. Unless you mean specifically a backwards-compatible one (those exist?).

Not that I'm fond of Sony devices. I can top your 3 PS3s: I went through TEN PS2s. Ten. I wish I was making that up. Ah, the stories I could tell....

Though, to be fair, I'm not fond of Microsoft or Nintendo either.

Still, interesting to hear about PS3s failing like that.




As for the new consoles, I have no suggestions there. Frankly I hate them all. Dumped them, went to PC. But the PS3 thing was interesting to hear.

You're turning 21? Buy some BEER first.

And between the consoles, it's no contest. I have a ps4 and the only big game I have for it is Battlefield 4 and it's amazing. The only problem so far is that you have to pay to play online, and the free games that come with it haven't been very good, and we won't have any major AAA games until late fall or winter. But other than that I love it.

I do mean that particular model. The only version to be fully backwards compatible is the 60 gig model. They're quite rare now, given that people want backwards compatibility and they fail a lot. From what I understand, they usd a cheap lead free solder on the motherboards in those models, so they heat up and the solder flows away from where it should be. You can breathe life back into them for a few months if you crack them open and re-melt the solder where it needs to go. I believe the only permanent-ish solution is to replace it entirely with a lead based solder. I fixed one a few times, then gave up.

I didn't really want a new console either. They've mostly lost my interest. I'll stick with my SNES, PS2, and Dreamcast. For anything new I'm relegated to handhelds and downloadable titles, since most console games never bother to have any ounce of creativity anymore. I will always yearn for the days of the Dreamcast, when Sega routinely made fun, vibrant, creative games. If only they could have managed themselves even remotely as a company. Now we get the occasional The World Ends With You (seriously though Square Enix, that's by far the best game you made since Squaresoft), but for the most part companies are content with making a ton of identical Call of Duty games, and near identical clones. Or a million Mario games with difficulty levels for four year olds. Sigh. I guess I'll survive as long as there are companies around to localize weird Japanese things, or consoles are region free.

Yep. That's why I switched to PC. There's no end of creativity and challenge there, as long as you avoid the AAA titles (which are typically ports from consoles). The vast majority of PC game developers do not have to deal with some big damn publisher breathing down their necks, and so are able to make the game that THEY want to make, not the game that the publisher forces them to make.

The fact that there's about 20 billionty games for it helps too.

Wheras the consoles and handhelds.... ugh. I loathe drawn-out cutscenes (or any cutscenes at all, really), obsessions with graphics, and games that are braindead-easy. And the vast majority of console games (that arent totally multiplayer focused) have all three of those things in huge amounts. Do not want. I now have only a PS3 and an imported 360; the PS3 is used only for a couple of specific fighting games (though I normally play those at a friend's house), and the 360 is used for imported games of the shmup genre, and nothing else. The Wii was bloody stupid and I have no use for it. Had one briefly, sold it, never went back.

Honestly, after the days of the SNES and Genesis and whatnot, the consoles just were never the same to me. Things started degrading. I had an Xbox, but it wasnt very useful and mostly just did Crimson Skies and Ninja Gaiden. The PS2 had quite a number of games, but was also the single shoddiest pile of badly made junk that I've ever owned, and I mean that with absolute sincerity. Even for all of the games on it that I liked, it just is not worth it any more. Sold ALL of them. And I also had a Gamecube.... it existed for ONE game, which was Phantasy Star Online 2. Never found much else good on it. At least THAT thing was nigh-indestructible though. Had it bounce down a flight of stairs once, no damage at all. Wheras the PS2.... there was one that died COMPLETELY because it fell exactly 1 and a half feet, if that. I wish I was making that up.

Wheras I have an ancient Atari 7800 unit (also plays 2600 games) that gets far more frequent use than any of those ever did and has a permanent spot on my desk next to the keyboard here. NES, SNES, those were great too.

I like the cut scenes in cod and battlefield. lots of idependent game makers on ps4 . too many for me to look at all of them.

i view pcs as good for RTS games only like aoe, civ, total war etc

my ps2 is still running today it is one of the original fat ps2s. my playstaion and ps3 aren't working anymore. i replaced the first with a ps1, the vita killed my ps3 when i tried to link them, i assume it caused rapid overheating. sony says its the connection from th hdd to the motherboard and can be fixed for 180, a new one is only 260.

mainly only use my pc for minecraft now.

Neh, the misconception that PCs only do RTS or MMO or things like that is common, yet very incorrect.

As a rule, there are far more of any genre (and I mean more to the point of being outright absurd) on PC than on consoles (due to lack of needing publishers or manufacturers), with only a couple of exceptions: JRPGs (every other sub-genre of RPG is common though, including some that NEVER appear on consoles) and fighting games. I use mine for every genre that isnt fighting games, JRPGs (which I dont at all like, boring and easy), sports games (hate) and.... I think that's it. Every other genre, I like, and I've got numerous games in my collection for each. Shmups, Roguelikes, simulation types, citybuilders (or games like Anno which are citybuilders combined with some other genre), MMOs, platformers, and sandbox games are my favorite genres. The first 5 of those there are nearly never found on consoles, yet are favorite genres of mine (is a big part of why I dumped the damn things). Not to mention hyper difficult or hyper complicated games, as I tend to be drawn towards those. The imports are the one and only place I can get those sorts on consoles, and ONLY in the shmup genre.

The problem with PC gaming though is knowing where to look. With consoles, the games sort of come to you, as major publishers advertise the funky hell out of them, and practically jump up and down and scream about it until people buy it. On PC? This simply doesnt happen. There's just too many, and advertising is very, very different on PC as a rule. It doesnt help that advertising on PC is also very very ANNOYING, as people who come up with ads seem incapable of making ads that arent stupid banner ads, popup ads, or "plays before every damn video ever even if you've seen the stupid ad 23405234750270527 times" types. That's probably the one disadvantage of these VS consoles, is that it takes more effort to find things.... or even know that they exist. This is where the misconception of "oh, they're only good for 2 or 3 genres, they've got nothing else" comes from. *I* have no problems finding anything at all, but then I've been doing this since waaaaayyyyyyyy before the Net existed

Some may assume that lack of controller support is another downside, but that's not true if you know what you're doing. I use the PS3 controller for damn near everything, including the PC version of Minecraft (which as you likely know does not have controller support on it's own). Have to do that, as the mouse gives me alot of trouble when my arm is flared up, so I cant always use it. Only RTS games cannot be done using a controller. Even I cant come up with a viable setup for those.


The only thing that tends to bother me is that pretty much EVERYONE I know is your extremely stereotypical 360 fan that plays every FPS that ever exists on there ever, and hardly anything else. With a couple of them being similar but instead attached to the JRPG genre (ugh). Most of them can barely USE a PC, let alone do gaming on it. Very.... annoying. I really must find a specific forum for this sort of thing to hang out in. I tend to hang around the gaming sections of many forums, such as this one, but my participation in any given topic is rare, and gets more rare as time goes on, as none of the forums I go to are really gaming specific at all, and what little IS there is always about very recent and very major (hardly ever niche stuff) console titles.

The PS4 is probably the better long term investment. The Wii U definitely does have certain types of games you're not going to see much on the PS4 though.

I actually have both systems, but bought the PS4 first.

Wait until Nintendo's E3 Digital Event is over, as well as watch Sony's E3 conference tonight, to see which side offers what, THEN you will have an easier time choosing.

I have both consoles. It's a tough call, but I think maybe you should get the new Mario Kart 8 WiiU set.
