Curious. What do you find problematic about the World of Ruin's story in FF6?

Waaaaaayyyyyyy too much to list. Seriously, it'd turn into a rant that'd be really long, even for me. There are others (mostly LPers) that I've seen that point these things out in a much more coherant matter than I could, and with less rambling. I've tried explaining them before, but all I did was confuse the hell out of those listening, to the point where they didnt know what I even meant. I aint good with stuff like this.

Though it's not JUST stuff I found problematic, but also smaller bits that were just questions that I either missed the answers to, or that were never given answers at all (hard for me to tell which is which).

I haven't really gotten into a lot of specific RPGs...though I am not entirely sure what all would qualify as that. I play League of Legends but I think that's a MMO or something but not really sure what the difference is either way I find that game fun. I have played fantasy themed console games with a lot of quests and adventuring around which I enjoy, but cannot think of any specific ones really...but they've seemed sort of RPG in nature. I never have liked that final fantasy game because of the turn based combat if I am playing a computer or video game I prefer more slashing action not taking turns. I did play that Magic card game or whatever for a while it would seem some games like that can also be considered RPG, then I moved away from the people I played it with and haven't found others into it so that's why I don't play it anymore but I did find it fun.

I like RPGs, I think that it is kind of fun to raise a character up and send them through the world. I do think there is a bit of a tough balance though, you don't want to feel like you are stuck in one area, it can't be too tough, but too easy where you fight the same thing over and over again can be boring.

In general I love raising a character and collecting as many good things as I can. A base has felt like a must where I can look over what I have collected. My favourite type of class tends to be a mage like character, they often end up some of the most fun in being versatile. Had an interesting experience in Dragon Age Origins when I got an extra school that allowed my magic to count as strength which allowed them to then become also a powerful warrior. Kind of an interesting surprise and an unexpected evolution of my character.

RPGs have different levels of hand holding where it drifts between hand holding telling you where to go and conveying story, and being very open, letting you make the decisions, and it is you who is making the story. Something like Skyrim or later Fallout give you a heap of freedom of where to go and what you think your character is. Something like Final Fantasy XIII is pretty much one long corridor, and the characters are largely already defined. I think the more open ones what you need to do is search for a goal, when starting some I have often searched online how to get certain things and then work towards that, like collect a lot of certain items, or get a new ability, and play as a certain type of character.

I do have an experience with an interesting RPG series called Etrian Oddesy, it is notable for being one where you go into dungeons and you actually draw your map to write down areas of interest, short cuts, and hazards. The original series also allows you to fully customise your team members with names and classes for which battles that can be a bit tricky. I have really only played some of Untold which added a story which I can play with more pre-defined characters and dialogue. It was a surprisingly interesting game.

Anyway, if you don't like too open where you get bored, there are probably a whole heap of games with tighter story, like Bioware's Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Yeah they bore me too. I usually stick to first person shooters mostly. I think RPG's are just a little too slow for me. I hate grinding, and sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the choices. I can never decide how I want to build my character. Also I feel it just takes to much effort and thought. When it comes to video games I guess I just like shooting things in the head.

Some RPGs can be fun. I'm completely hooked on Pokemon, and I also enjoyed Lunar Dragon Song when it came out.

What are your experiences with RPGs?

The three ones you mentioned are almost the same game, it's not a fair representative of the RPG genre. It's like you are saying Call of Duty 1, 2 , 3...etc.

You may want to try non-open world RPGs.

There's also the old fashion Pillars of Eternity and Divinity - Original Sin .

Great recommendations, I have heard good things about Wasteland 2 and Shadowrun returns. I will definitely be checking them out if Fallout 4 doesn't consume my life.

I really should not be posting here, since I don't like conflict, and I love RPGs of all types, but I do occasionally find some of the more complicated ones can't keep my attention, Ex. I never beat Morrowind because I had no idea where the heck to go, then Oblivion came along, added a quest compass, and I was immediately addicted.

So do I. These medieval and magical themed RPG's put me to sleep. Only one I ever liked is "Kingdom Hearts 2".

I can't stand it when I'm lost in games and have no idea what I'm supposed to do or where to go next.

Yes, that is the Smile Dog! :D It's on my Deviantart page. And yes, I always got burned out on Zelda and other RPG's because they're so confusing. Only RPG's I'm interested in are the RPG launchers in "Grand Theft Auto." Stealing cars and making money is much easier to comprehend than magic potions and spells, and way more fun IMO.

One problem I have with RPG's is that I'm so rarely in the mood to play them that I forget the details of the game and have to relearn it every time I play. Then I usually get bored and stop playing before I make any progress.

I've never seen this as a huge drawback, since most RPGs take much longer to beat than typical games, and they usually have quite a few sequels.

Gosh, I hate that. I'll get like halfway through a game (maybe not even an RPG, I've done this with the Metroid Primes) and then get distracted by another game, and by the time I get back to the first game I can't remember what I was doing or where I was headed. Sometimes I try to continue anyway, sometimes I start over again.

Hahahaha! God, yes! I also thought this thread was about RPGs and then it turned out to be about computer games! Man, I'm a dinosaur.

I read too many books in my life, so I find story-based computer games to be a straitjacket for the imagination. I played a lot of strategy games though, to the point of obsession, which is why I don't play anymore.

I remember when my best friend got a Commodore-64, and I wasn't even remotely interested.

That happens to me too, and it's frustrating. Sometimes I can't get into it again and start over, but if I get distracted again...

I also wish all good games had a lot of replay value after the story arc is done.

I honestly find more enjoyment out of tabletop rpgs than I do most game rpgs like fallout, skyrim, etc. Plus most of them are noticeably a lot cheaper too which is always a plus :o
