Heh. As an optional mode, perhaps. I prefer a free or mostly-free camera - Combat Mission has that sort of restricted camera (well, at unit level sort of thing) as an option for extra realism but I find it takes some of the enjoyment away.

Really? I try to have my camera stick to my general unit on ETW and have my general in a spot where he can see the field. Really makes it immersive.

... or maybe have the camera toggle in 1st person view to the commander of each unit + the general. its so, so much different when you're 'on their boots' rather than some omniscient buzzard hovering around.

I can dream :D

Mmm, I like being an omniscient buzzard. I'm thinking of the film Waterloo, where at one point the camera pulls up and out over the battlefield, and the French cavalry are circling round the squares of the defenders... it's spectacular, and not the kind of thing you could see if the camera was stuck to Napoleon's hat. :)

Well I am disappointed that they've gone to a more simpler form of warfare, I saw it coming. CA has had a spotty track with supporting games vs rapid-releasing but it looks like they really put extra into this one. I can't judge the game until I see the multiplayer, seeing as it is where the actual novel things are.

Eh? my ETW doesnt show an option for campaign multiplayer and i've the latest patch. o.O

It was a beta you could sign up too that was fully implemented into NTW. It's not as stable as the NTW version, which is ashame because I like the scope of the ETW map and would like the features from NTW ported over to great an uber grand campaign.

But alas no I can't have that it would be too convenient for CA they'd have to charge me for it as a DLC at the very least.

I honestly would stand in absolute awe if CA had put the player on the seat of the general's horse.. like in Mount and Blade .. the immersion and perspective would be freaking incredible!

You can put the camera to generals view only in the setup. I've never tried playing the game like it before. Might pose an interesting challenge

One reason I don't like that sort of thing much is that the challenge it presents is actually harder and more limiting than a real general would have it - you just don't get the situational awareness from looking at a computer screen that you do from really being in a field surrounded by thousands of people having a go at each other. And you can't ask people things, or give instructions, you're stuck dealing with a user interface. I feel that, even aside from the entertainment benefits of a cinematic view, having a more flexible camera makes up for the restrictions of the whole computer setup. With Mount & Blade (or any first person game) if you're looking at an external camera view of your camera you have the feedback of where your limbs are, what you're doing, and a near 360 degree range of vision - which is like what we normally have if we're alert, because we don't stare fixedly forward but look from side to side and occasionally behind us - instead of the fairly myopic forward angle of a "character's eye" view.

Don't Generals usually have some sort of messengers relaying information to the rest of their armies? (Via a horse)

Yup. Some even had subordinate commanders able to make their own tactical decisions.

The more closer you get to modern times the more professional and complex the command chain and channels of communication.

Big differance from medieval battles of 10,000 or so to Americain Civil War battles with maybe 100,000+ on each side
