World of Warcraft Boosts Social Skills
Ok, good luck with that, why don't you go out to a nightclub and try and make as many friends as you can? Is one of the main problems with aspergers somehow passing you by? Maybe you've already made so many friends this week that you decided to spend tonight inside on the computer yeah?
This is the difference between theory and real life, it's a nice theory that you can go out and make friends but my real life experience says that wow gives people the chance to experience aspies at their best, being good at the things that interest them. Wow players appreciate game playing ability over social ability, it's a great place for an aspie to develop social skills because you can enjoy doing other things in a social context and the social aspect will develop on it's own while you're busy enjoying yourself.

that rule never applied to me, i was just as scared of the players on wow as i am of people in real life, the fact that i was never that good at the game made problems worse.
i had a nightelf warrior, who i built up from scratch to lvl 80 on my own, i never asked for help, and i tried to develop a system with my characters to become self sufficient, it worked for a good long while too.
warrior was the miner and blacksmith, she gathered ore, made bars, and armor\weapons\ and other things
hunter was the engineer, it was her job to make the chopper for the warrior.
paliden was the enchanter\tailor she made scrolls for enchants and disechanted things for the auction house, she also made sure everyone had bags.
basicly i had a character with every profession and i would bounce items from one to another as needed.
I do that myself, got a whole chain of professions. Personally though it was the pvp that got me really into wow and forced me to start socialising. I got ganked by some hunter ( guy named redstone, this was x years ago and i still remember), and it annoyed me so much that I got 0 help from anyone that I started saying that I was always going to come back to the low level areas to help with high level gankers. 20 levels later and I'd be back every day ( it lasted literally like about 18 months of me doing the same every day, i was totally focused on it) I'd ask in local defence if anyone needed any help. People would answer, people that were just as annoyed by being ganked and I would help them and sometimes I'd end up becoming friends with them. It wasn't so much that I was looking to make friends but purely out of necessity ( having to group up at level 40 to kill say level 60s) I'd group with people multiple times and slowly I've got more and more used to it.
Pvp realms are great for providing that necessity to group. Without pvp I can easily have seen myself getting bored of wow a long time ago, you add people and you've suddenly got a random factor that just keeps you coming back for more. I think the whole things built my confidence up with people and social situations.
I'm still not great with social through, I still refuse to talk on comms and because of that I've never got too into arena, I rarely do more than the absolute minimum gamesn needed and the max rating ive been up to is about 1800 ( although my mmr is frequently higher and I've beaten 2200 rating teams). I did some raiding in wrath( purely for pvp, for trinkets and weapons) but it was only ever pug raiding and I've never really got into the guild thing the way other people do. Still, there are plenty of things for me to do as someone that does prefer to remain as solo as possible and tbh i think that in some ways it's made me a better player for trying to do everything alone before I'll group with people (example screenie, got tons more with people saying equally nice things, people never send messages insulting me in game as i hear is common, I've only ever had compliments for the entire time ive played http://imageshack.us/f/687/wowscrnshot102610015524.jpg/).

cool i was on an rp normal server, no pvp unless you flagged yourself, pvp was hell for me when i was forced into it on the battlegrounds. because not only couldn't i not fight well but i've got this thing against killing players, i'm fine if the other character is an ai
but i wasn't going to join a pvp server hell no... i got enough of getting ganked, raped, farmed, taunted, annoyed, missfired [where an archer's stay arrow hits you], killstealed, made fun of, and what not on conquer online. by the end of the 2 years i played it i wanted to violently murder everyone on that server, i'm slowly coming to grips with my rage toward that game but it's still hard. because when i see pvp that is what i remember.
i liked it better when i could choose if i wanted to be ganked, raped, farmed, taunted, annoyed, killstealed, made fun of, and what not. and i had a hard enough time just completing the quests most of the time, the AIs killed me enough as it was. i had a personal grudge against the abominations after a while.
i never got compliments of course i never talked to even be remembered, but i wasn't playing the game to be social or make friends it was by my real friend's request, and i try not to think of it but i blame her for getting me to play the game. because that game sucked the life out of me, i wasn't doing anything but play wow, and at one point i thought i was going to be a hostage to it, and i thank my bro and fallout 3 for getting me my life back, but even now i still have withdraws.
and i told my mom to have my dad lock my cds in the gun safe.

A guy I know, who is the same age as I am, is addicted to WoW. I can tell you that he hasn't been the same since. He used to be a VERY talented musician and student, and got along with everyone just fine. But now when I visit him, all he talks about is WoW and how I should play. On his Facebook wall, he has virtually no activity. His grades have been dropping at an alarming pace. That's what WoW does to you.

exactly what i went through when i played it, it saddens me to hear these stories. but at the same time i am thankful i got off when i did.
but that's what it does, it ruins you you get to a point where like it or not the only thing you care about is the game. i know i've been there.
after play wow for a couple of years I'd say there hasn't been any sort of improvement in social skills, but then again I'm not in a guild and I leave the chat window closed most of the time.
