I just downloaded dwarf fortress
DF is a game where you build a fortress, with dwarves
You can pretty much do anything. Read the boatmurdered story, it is funny.
Yeah you can do anything, the gameplay is really, really loose. You can butcher dwarves, by first starving them to death in locked rooms, then make jewellery with their bones. You can trap animals and tame them, or eat them. Sometimes dwarves adopt animals, you can have crazy dwarves with a herd of cats. Butcher or kill some of them and they get upset. Dwarves sometimes go into a "fel mood" and seize a workshop. If you don't get the materials they want (and you usually have to guess what those are) they go completely crazy and do all sorts of things. You can burn the forests down and anger the elves. Then kill the pointy eared bastards. Or like never chop a tree down and be best buddies with them. You can mine copper, silver or gold and make a currency. Then create preposterously large homes for your dwarves (with equally huge rents) and watch them all go homeless. The game is *really* loose. I doubt it is possible a game could be looser.
The game revolves around the idea of Fun (not fun, Fun with a capital). There is no game end, you keep playing until you get lots of Fun. Then start again. Fun can come in many forms, like huge demon invasions, ret*d dwarves carting rocks around instead of farming, the fortress inhabitants all becoming insane and killing each other, goblin invasion, elephant invasion. All kinds of Fun ![]()
You can slowly beat your crippled foes to death, removing each finger and toe individually, and then rip their throats out with your teeth. Followed by gorging on their blood until you're full. Followed by throwing their mutilated corpses into a bottomless pit never to be recovered for proper burial, dooming them to an eternity of anguish and confusion as a restless shade.
You can even take a front tooth as a keepsake.
Epic.
And yes as suggested above I recommend using a tileset if you don't want your eyes to melt out of your skull.

so basicly this games is a do whatever you want game, i might have to give this a shot then.
lol I have an adventurer who just barely survived a bandit quest. She's fairly seasoned and previously eliminated a band of bandits and a creature of the night, as well as a cougar but that isn't noteworthy.
After a year in retirement she pledged to eliminate a troublesome band of outlaws, when she arrived at the camp she picked off the rabble using superior tactics but the leader was nowhere to be found. So she headed towards the nearby hamlet to rest and return tomorrow.
The leader ambushed her in the forest.
Using my usual tactics I went for the easiest shot because once they're in enough pain they are easy pickings. It goes both ways. He blocked all my shots and ended up with the first strike, severing an artery and motor nerve in my leg. I fell over. He managed to get a few shots in on my leg and feet, I was faint from blood loss and bleeding heavily before I got a nice square shot in his lower body.
After that the fight continued as a struggle, neither of us getting any shots in, I assumed I would bleed to death but he ended up collapsing from pain, I delivered a coupe de grace to the head and made it back to town and back into retirement.
My adventurer may never walk again but the list of organizations hailing her as a hero is over a page long.
BTW I start all my adventurers as peasants because I'm such a Fun loving guy lol
lol one of my miners died in a tragic accident while digging a super deep pit in front of my gate.
Fittingly I built her a tiny tomb at the bottom, but before I seal it I think I'll put a live child in. Then I'll redirect the river for good measure.
As for my wounded, they shall be condemned to drown in cages as I have no use for them.
i'm slowly figuring this out, this is a pretty complex game.
Did you dl a tileset?
what's a tileset? like a texture pack?
after i posted that the s**t hit the fan and everyone started starving thanks to my limited knowledge of the game, i had no idea how to even plant crops. so i ran out of food. oh well you live and you learn. turns out you need to actually plant crops

That's exactly what happened to me lol. I haven't tried farming yet, I survive by fishing so far.
And about tilesets yes correct, this is the one I use http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2431

oh i think the game combo pack i found came with a few tilesets, i'm not sure if i like it, it makes the screen really wide.
I lost an incredible number of hours (days? weeks?) of my life to this game. I haven't played in a while - I seemed to have just hit my limit and I needed to walk away. But I still check the forums sometimes and I never stop enjoying what I find there. (My name there is Sappho, in case any of you knew me there.)
I remember when constructions and levels (3d) were first introduced to the game. I spent days and days of IRL time constructing the massive, legendary pyramid Sungate, one brick at a time. I threw myself into it. I pushed through bugs and glitches. I just had to get it done. When finished, I posted it on the forums. It was voted the largest construction ever made in the game and I believe someone gave me a medal...
Shortly thereafter, Toady released a new version where you could place as many tiles as you wanted at once, without having to place each brick individually. I cradled my overstrained wrists and whimpered...
Hmmm..... Maybe I should boot up the game and make some new legendary something or other... It was Good Times, after all...

I think I figured out why screen does that. Do you have a square or wide monitor?

widescreen moniter, i've had it for a long time now. it was a christmas or bday present when my other older style moniter started dieing on me. how do i get the game to go 4\3 and not 16\10. mine is a 16\10 most are 16\9 i think. but i've never had a game do this before on windowed mode.
