My favorite edition of AD&D was 2nd Edition Player's Option. Mainly because the perks and flaws system allowed you to make some pretty off the wall characters.

I was pretty sure this is standard for any hardcore RPing gamer nowadays, isn't it? Whenever I think up a character, I give them things that make them unique and/or interesting.

I still have all my 3.5 books and I'm still going to play 3.5. Can't believe 5th is already out..

I like Pathfinder, sticking with that.

Is it just me, or are goblins, kobolds, and flumphs cute?

I've always played with the 3.5 edition, even when the 4th and its extensions came out. I am much more into Shadowrun and Call of Cthulu Roleplaying, anyway.

Without a formal system that can generally only go so far. Player's Option was the closest that D&D got to a GURPS/Champions style Advantage/Disadvantage system. My friends also played a lot of Heroe System games. Players Option gave us a chance to play D&D ina simular way. One of our favorite Options was the concept of a Signature Spell. For a few points based on spell level it gave you the ability to cast your signature spell 1 more time a day but, also allowed you to change the "Cosmetics" of that spell to anything within reason. For example a Wizard who's magic missiles are playing cards. One of my favorite characters had a Spectral Steed spell that looked like a Nightmare.

I'm actually thinking about trying one of the versions that Gary Gygax himself actually wrote. Likely AD&D 1st, though Swords & Wizardry ("retro clone" of original 70s D&D rules) sounds interesting too...but maybe a bit too oldschool...

So I actually happened to find AD&D 1st and 2nd PHB at Goodwill and snagged them both. I like a lot of the things he (Gygax) has to say, especially his wisdom and reasonings as to why the game works the way it does, but something about the game just feels a bit "stuffy"...

I think maybe I'll go with Original or Basic, and throw in the rules from Advanced that I like. I was reading the intro to Labyrinth Lord, and I guess that's how a lot of people played the game back then.
