If you want hardcore nastiness then try out EVE online, the space-based MMO. Everywhere you turn the game is designed to destroy your hard work in advancing to where you are, by giving other players free rein in wrecking your ship and you!

Definitely only for those people who have a masochistic streak.

Looking at Eve for it's core gameplay elements to me it seems uber well done. However, I hate space games, and space ship battle.

I also noticed how a lot of people who play Eve are angry stiffs of people. Maybe that's why? lol

I'm a pretty inexperienced gamer, but I've been playing LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online) for over a year and I really enjoy it. I'm strictly a solo player but my husband joins fellowships and kins and seems to have a good experience with other players. My casual contact with the others there has always been good. Of course, it helps if you like Tolkien.

WoW is now playable for free up to a certain level.

I recommend Guild Wars. I've been playing since it first came out over 5 years ago, and they still do special events and holiday stuff. It's a good one, people are cooler than ones I generally meet on WoW. Guild Wars 2 is supposed to come out later this year, which looks awesome.

I've considered LOTRO. How good are your pc specs? Mine are not the greatest, but not terrible. How is the population? Is it pay to win? Is the game mainly open world? I can't get into heavily instance based mmo's.

Oh, you might also check out Star Trek Online. You can download it free through Steam. A lot of the gamers in our clan have said good things about it.

Oh I will be getting GW2 the day it comes out. Already planned on it. Watching beta vids right now, incredible I say! Can't wait for that one, but will have to wait for quite some time it seems. I met one of the coolest ladies on a different game, who is addicted to GW1 plus GW2... So I have to admit I am kinda excited about starting GW2.

I thought GW1 sucked, mainly because it is instance based in most of the game.

Star trek never appealed to me. The game itself does not look fun IMO either.

Hi there, just joined and thought is post here as I've been here myself. I think where ever you go you will find serious players there is no getting away from it. People sell gold and items for real money and even characters, an EVE character went for £1000, that's about 1800 dollars. Any way, since I stopped playing my mmrpg I found many alternatives, none with that perfect crafting though Eldar Scrolls comes close. Have you seen guild wars? It's similar and no fee to play, there's another one like that that's free for download but I forget. There is also the Diablo series, I'm a big fan of it though Diablo 3 is like WoW and its made by the same people. There is also an Indie game called Demise, but 8rd currently only on XP and that is vrry in depth and has multiplayer. Also you can make 4 characters and team them up. If you don't mind single player and like complex gameplay try and google rougelike games. They are turn based and generate random levels so its always different. ADOM is good for that, even has. A button for wipeing your forehead.

There is Everquest but i cross the line where you can order a pizza from the game. And it has some pretty serious players on there.

Ah yes. Serious players are everywhere. I forgot people sold accounts on there. Not a big fan of diablo, turn based, or single player games for the most part. EQ was the one that started them all... It goes F2P soon as well, the first one I mean. I might try going back. You can literally order real pizza from the EQ client? That's kinda awesome, if it's not exploitable.

You'll have to forgive my ignorance; I like using computers but know far less about them than my husband and this is the only online game I've ever played. I'll try and be helpful, though!

My husband built our computer. The CPU is an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz, we have 4Gb of RAM, our video card is an Nvidia GeForce 8600GT. This system runs the game well, along with a lot of other stuff like Autodesk Architecture (CADD).

The game is free to play, and you can stay on that basis for quite a while to see if you enjoy it, but if you like it you will probably want to subscribe (about $10 a month.) Some areas of the world are free to play, others have a minimal purchase amount that you can satisfy with points you earn in the game or a small amount of actual money. You do not have to spend real money to do well in the game, and in fact, there are very few things in the game that can be purchased with real money. I don't think most people use anything but points. Playing in instances is not required for the most part, and almost all of the ones you have to do are set up for solo players or groups. There seem to be very few jerks; people will leave you alone or interact with you according to your wishes. It is easier to play some character classes with a group than it is solo, but so far, I've been able to play each of my 4 characters solo successfully. You'll have to explain anything else you want to know

I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a game. You pretty much party up in a town or outpost, then go off and get your own instance for your quests and so forth. If you don't have a party, you can bring AI players to help you. There's also PvP battles, if you're into that.I bought it when it first came out, then didn't play it at all until a bunch of the people in my gaming clan started playing it every day, and it ended up being fun.

I've pretty much found that for me these days, it doesn't matter as much what the specifics of the game are, it's all about having a cool group of people to play with.

I played WoW for many years. I believe it is a very bad time to start it right now. If Pandaclysm turns out to be awesome, then by all means go for it, but so many of the best developers have been pulled away from the project, and the quality of the end-game is just piss poor lately.

i wont be purchasing wow. it sounds like ur typical crap mmorpg now.

WoW is a grindfest. That's all it is. You grind quests and dungeons to hit max level. You grind to get mats for crafting. Then you grind heroics to get better gear and get into raids. Then you grind raids for better gear.

That's all you do. True story. Can it be fun? Sometimes. Usually if you have someone to play it with. But I honestly don't think it's worth 15 dollars a month.

I put about 300 days into WoW (/played) and found it to be an adequate waste of time gameplay-wise, its just such a shame that MMORPGs have to require cooperative gameplay in order to progress beyond a certain point. I spent most evenings wanting to kill people for screwing up what to me was a simple matter of "If X then Y, If Y then Z"
