Check out the Ultima series, especially Ultima Underworld. The first Elder Scrolls game (Arena) allegedly used the same engine as Underworld, but for some reason they left out most of the features that made that game so great.

I've found nothing to confirm that. At best, I found that the developers were inspired by it.

I wouldn't just say they threw away their fanbase. I've been a TES fan since Daggerfall (and very nearly purchased Arena - I regret missing it when it was new) and I like Skyrim.

Classes are not what appeal to me about the games. It's more the open world sandbox exploration and ability to carve out a place in the world in one or more ways. Skyrim takes out a step I never particularly enjoyed (which was to make my own classes to suit the playstyle I wanted).

But I am a categorizer. When I create a character I need to set up what specifics I'm going to use beforehand. Not do it while playing.

Like Soul Calibur 4 instances you choose the fighting style and then you create the character. So a class, then build it around the class. I cannot work with classless systems because I like to organize everything. And classless systems drive me crazy because it takes me out of the world a little bit.

I want to say "I am a wizard in Skyrim", but it instead "I am becoming a wizard" because I must play the game to enhance my wizarding skills. So I was not a wizard in skyrim on the job. I am becoming a wizard in skyrim and it's becoming my job. If that makes sense.

I wasn't saying you were wrong, I was pointing out that as a long-time fan of the series, my reactions are unlike yours. It's not accurate to say they're tossing their loyal fans aside. But it is accurate to say they made radical changes that not everyone will accept.

Yeah, that's why I said "allegedly".

I don't believe it, myself. I don't see why they'd use the same engine, but keep all the architecture at 90° angles.

My all-time favorite is Ultima IX: Ascension.

Never got around to that one =( I had 4, 7, and 8 back in the day...almost beat 8, but the game crashed near the end and took all my saves with it. I ended up using cheat codes to skip straight to the ending, just to see it.

Slowly working my way through the rest of the series now (in order)...I've beat 1-3, working on 4 at the moment.

I should also probably get back to work on Underworld 2...haven't touched it in a few months.

Who alleges it? I can't find anything from Bethesda that makes such a claim.

I'm liking 1.5 - lots of nasty bugs squashed, the main one being that the guards in Markarth are no longer trying to kill me on sight. I'd found a few more extra locations yet the release notes don't make any mention of those. Maybe I'm wrong and they were there all along, but I'm sure I'd explored everywhere.

Dunno, I read it on some website somewhere. Could've been Wikipedia.

Weird. Not that there's any shortage of bizarre rumors about videogames as it is.

This is game I've been playing on my Xbox almost exclusively for 3 months now. While ther's many things about the game I really like, it is a serious glitch fest. The longer you play the more glitches you'll run into, and some of them are bound to tick you off. It's driving me crazy that in my second character's game, that old, cranky alchemist in Windhelm won't die so I can start the Repairing the White Phial quest like I was able to do with my first character.

The second Wolf Queen quest has a serious glitch too, that if all three waves of Draugr don't come out in the final battle, you won't be able to leave the catacombs because the exit door won't activate. Oops. That infuriated me when I first came across it, because I hadn't been religiously saving my progress and had to restart the whole quest.

And in the Dawnstar quest to take care of the nightmares--watch out for your wizard companion getting stuck on the stairs on the way to unlock the library door. I had to unstick him by attacking him, then running to the library door, then waiting for him to catch up to me, then out of the dungeon with him chasing after me. He didn't follow me outside, so when I went back inside, he was just waiting for me like I hadn't attacked him at all and the library door was unlocked, allowing me to continue the quest. But still, annoying. I don't like having to spend an hour trying to figure out a way around these glitches.

Oh and after you do the Riften quest to steal the horse for Larry Letrush, expect to see Larry around a lot. LOL.

To OP: Absolutey! I love Skyrim so far. Oblivion was also a great game. After I played Oblivion, I wanted to try out Morrowind but couldn't get into it. The graphics were just too old.

In Skyrim, I have completed a number of main storyline quests, as well as a few side quests. The last quest I completed was a sidequest in Windhelm where I had to travel to Riften to kill this mean old lady who runs the Orphanage there. The main storyline quest I am on currently is Alduin's Wall.

Great game!
