What game characters do you like that other people hate?
98% of Resi fans love the original Resi characters.
Also I don't dislike any characters in GTA IV.

Kurtis Stryker from Mortal Kombat 3 and onward (he returns in MK: Armageddon and MK9). People in general think he's too much of an everyman among cyber ninjas and four-armed Shokan warriors, but I always thought he was hella cool. I loved his nightstick slide move, and his ability to pop out his machine gun and pump his opponent full of lead (it's funnier in-game).
Then there's a couple of characters from the Street Fighter EX games (by Arika), which I think were mostly poorly received by fans, just like the whole game itself... I liked Pullum Purna a lot, and D. Dark and Skullomania. Garuda was a cool mid-boss as well. Well, according to the Street Fighter Wikia, Garuda was actually kinda popular.

I am the only person I know who LOVES yoshi in real life.
I will never admit this in real life but I absolutely love the gobbo's out of the playstation game Croc:Legend of the gobbo's. I like making little gobbo noises while happy sometimes.

Wait a second... people hate Toad? I LOVE TOAD!! !! !! And all the other Toads, including Toadette and Toadsworth. I, too, have a Toad plushie (with pink spots).
I love Peach too... and Luigi. Do people hate Luigi?
Trying to think of more people might hate... hmm.
There was someone out of Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy who was deemed annoying by a lot of people yet I don't think I did find him that annoying at all.

I always liked Cait Sith in Final Fantasy 7. Thought he was really cute and he made a nice magic user if you insist on going down the beaten path (Like I did). Found he was largely hated later on and people exaggerated his uselessness. His limit breaks are bad but when you have Cloud with omnislash and tons of multi-hit materia and W-summon everyone else is a moot point. I think Vincent's 'breaks were far worse, with the exception of the one limit break that turns your whole party into one giant Cait Sith, that IS useless.
Also chalk me up as one of the few people who liked (and used) Relm in FF6 and Rinoa in FF8. Seems everyone prefers Quistis, blah.
I don't mind Cait Sith either NZ... mind there is that first limit break he has isn't that bad but based on the dice rolls I get, I see your point.

If you keep him set to his level 1 limit break it will fill up faster and you don't have to worry about accidentally killing your party or screwing them over and even then its hard to get those rolls and there's always the one that insta-kills everything. Back when I first played FF7 when I was very young I couldn't beat Carry Armor and his limit actually saved me. You could also just use Cait Sith as a healer/medic-y type character for regular fights and just let the limit gauge make him get turns faster (I think your speed is boosted when you have limit status?).
Not really a character per-say, but in Pokemon I always liked the bug types, especially Venomoth, Butterfree and Beedrill. The type was largely underpowered and bad until Heracross and Scizor were introduced and Scizor really didn't become good competitively until the ADV gen. As it stands now, especially in gen 4 and 5, bugs are a very good offensive type and now have some really hard hitters like Yanmega and Volcarona. Venomoth, a long time favorite, is kind of overshadowed still but has the potential to play in upper tiers thanks to a new move called "quiver dance" that boosts its stats and it has a unique niche in being able to use baton pass (passing status over to another 'mon). Sadly Butterfree and my dear Beedrill are still regarded as garbage, especially the latter, and will remain that way forever due to their horribly low stat allocations. I still try to use Beedrill when I can in the games. I also love grass types and poison types, the latter of which were terribly useless for a long time. Muk and Weezing were SO cool though, I'm happy Weezing became good with the addition of the ability "levitate"(immune to ground moves). My favorite gym leader, Koga, also used poison types, along with his daughter in GSC. Grass types are cool in general and the type has my favorite moves, like leech seed and wood hammer. All of my favorite starters, except for gen 2, are grass types too: bulbasaur(YES YES YES), treeko, turtwig(YES), and snivy (YES YES).
Fav "legendary" is also Articuno, the "defensive/bulky" of the bird trio yet its screwed by its typing ice/flying. I've never been a big fan of legendary pokemon, I think Mewtwo is boring, but I was in love with Articuno ever since I first encountered it in the sea foam islands. Has the most beautiful cry (use to have it as a ringtone) and it is my windows 7 user icon. With that said everytime I talk about pokemon with people they say "Articuno SUCKS!! ! Zapdos is the best bird!!". Maybe, but I still love Articuno, in gradeschool I even wrote a cheesy, self-insert fanfic with Articuno
Here's something NOT Pokemon related: in the playstation roleplaying game "Breath of Fire 3", I used the Nina character because I love magic..the problem is that magic is pretty terrible in BOF3, unlike 2 (my favorite installment) and its much easier to just use fast, physical attackers, like Rei (whom I did use because he was cool). Nina was my "useless" slot just because I loved using spells that were largely redundant and the game really made me suffer for it at times. Momo was a bit better ingame but I liked Nina more.
Also I'm going to go with "wizard" in D&D 3.5 for two reasons, both vastly different:
1. I think the evocation tree is really awesome and always like to pick a few spells in it just because stuff like fireball is so classic and neat. Evocation, sadly, is the most useless wizard/sorcery school.
2. I like the "cheesy" wizard schools that make the class so hated, in fact I love magic and get very mad if I'm not allowed to play a wizard or sorceress or a warlock or necro. How is this relevant to the topic you say and not just me talking about what I like?
Well, lots of people who play D&D now kind of rightfully hate casters, especially because of how much 3.5 favored them, especially wizards. I never got into the subsequent edition but hear moans and complaints about wizards and sorceress to the point where people don't allow certain spells or even the class to be taken. Melee almost always seems to suffer in some way but I've always loved being a caster and will get nearly temperamental about being forced to be any kind of melee character. The average person tends to prefer wielding a big cool sword and wacking stuff, nothing wrong there.
With all that said, wizards are pretty broken in 3.5 but I love them, unlike most people who just kind of groan outloud.
Speaking of Pokemon... Magikarp is hated though really it's unfair because he wasn't given hardly any moves until they implemented tackle.
Plus since you can't teach Magikarp any TM/HM moves, it will always remain hated.
In fact the only reason many got the 'karp was to train a Gyrados.

Magikarp has always learned tackle since gen 1. Its actually not as terrible as some new pokemon for 2 reasons, one of which you covered already:
1. It evolves into Gyarados.
2. It learns flail in one of the ADV games or gen 4. This is...something and if your opponent is stupid you can sweep their whole team using flail. Of course this is very predictable and its a lot easier to do with a pokemon who doesn't have garbage stats such as Gyarados or Heracross.
Magikarp's defenses can be boosted by the evolite item..though you would never want to use Magikarp unevolved, even for Little Cup style tournaments. There are worse 'mons though plus because of the cartoon and nostalgia I think lots of people love Magikarp. Its goofy and useless in an endearing way everyone likes.
You want to know who's terrible, has no redeeming value at all and is a completely worthless pokemon that I'm pretty sure no one in the whole world likes?
It doesn't even evolve or have anything special. I mean Farfetch'd at least gets a special item to boost his crit (he's still useless) and Flareon's stats are pretty nice, his movepool just sucks. Luvdisc has no likeable qualities whatsoever, it doesn't evolve, has sh***y stats and its..okay I guess...I kind of like it too..
