Would you prefer books (and use a board to play over the moves), interactive learning such as solving positions at a computer, or videos?

A few grandmasters are involved in giving lectures to kids (some talented and more advanced) and these get recorded and uploaded. After a quick glance it looks like a great free resource.

Pattern recognition is an important skill for chess players. There are many common patterns for checkmating the opponent's king, and for trapping or capturing pieces. Accumulating recognition of such tactical motifs is a quick path to improved results. A great free site to practice looking for such patterns is:
