Pathfinder?
Words are nothing if not acted on, and I say tally-hooo! I can DM, but it'd have to be a pre-made campaign. Playing a character would also be much less time consuming (which I need), and I can make Rogue 1/Magus 2 work with a few different races. A game can be run between two characters, so if we can garner interest we should be able to get a game going. Any idea on Level 3+ stuff we could put characters through, or are we gonna need to research? Also, what kind of race/class are you thinking about, assuming I can run this character?
Post Note: Pathfinder Society modules cost some money, so that's initially out.

Hmmm... let's see: back in the day it was fighter, magic user, priest, thief. There were also paladins and rangers a bit later on... Did I mention that I am totally new to anything past the first AD&D books (when I stopped playing) -- I am ready to try whatever is needed. But I have no idea what level 3 stuff would be or what race/class to consider. I have just been reading about the city of Absalom for the first time.
It sounds like it would be better not to play society games outside of those organized events.
Agreed.
Races and Classes, for your reference. If in doubt, Humans always have the Bonus Feat. What catches your fancy? With Magus/Rogue, a Ranger who's good with sword and bow would work well. They get Divine spells and an Animal Companion at level 4, so the ranger works pretty well at any range. Good battle-buddy to the Magus/Rogue, who's melee oriented and not without some capacity to control space.
Weren't rangers the big go to class in AD&D? If it's something familiar, it might be a good way of learning to play the game.
Treantmonk's Guide to Rangers
This will give you a good overview on how to make the Ranger work. Also includes a few ranger builds, including the Switch Hitter.
I'll whip together a Half-Elf Magus/Rogue this weekend as well. I want to make him a viable option for Pathfinder Society games, so eventually I will need to see if a Rogue3/Magus 4/Arcane Trickster 10 can even compete with a Fighter 17's to Hit rolls (based on what gear I can get with money vs the fighter's gear) , but the best thing about this build is that it'll be fine at the lower levels BaB wise. Ranger has a full BaB progression, so you don't have to worry about that nearly as much. The switch-hitter seems like a surefire hitter, and I know of some feats you could use to take advantage of the build.
Post Note: Since we aren't running a society game, how about we roll characters at 25 PT Buy?

Sorry, this is outside my experience. Back in the days of yore, we rolled 3 D6 stat sets several times and picked the combination we liked best. The DM would sometimes give us a mod (e.g., all rolls of 4 or less get a +6 bonus or somesuch). I never playe any kind of point buy in outside of a computer game. I don't understand rolls + point buy-- can you explain?
Edited to add: I have been intermittently struggling with this all weekend. The system seems sufficiently complicated that I am having EF issues with it--trying to figure out the details of generating a character makes me tired after a relatively short time because there is so much detail. I am beginning to wonder if I can hack it--this system just may not be for me. I will give it a try though. I won't abandon the project until I have a character or two and have tried playing the character in a game. If it seems more like work and less like play, though...
OK, I have a character, somewhat randomly generated. He will perhaps suffer for my ignorance in guiding his creation, but such are the vicissitudes of life. I found the character form at venturecaptain.com helped a lot.
Alric Strangeways, Ranger 3, 15/18/13/13/12/10 is a 25 year old male human of Garundi extraction. He has white hair, green eyes, a dark Garundi complexion and is rather tall at 78 inches. Mr. Strangeways is currently listed as a resident of Absalom where he is sometimes employed as a scribe, but he often makes long "pilgrimages" into the wilderness in the service of Desna.
Alric has allied himself with the Andoran faction and is vehemently opposed to all forms of oppression. He loves the stars and enjoys being out of doors at night. Gazing into the heavens under a dark sky, he feels a special communion with Desna and his heart longs to travel the wide spaces of the earth in wisdom and freedom. He has earned a reputation as a tracker and hunter of men, though he steadfastly refuses to use these skills in the service of the slavers who would gladly pay him. He despises Cheliax both for their pact with evil and for their obsession with order.
Alric favors the starknife, composite longbow and rapier and prefers to take his prey with skill from concealment or at a distance. He carries a buckler and chain shirt, preferring the protection of stealth, speed and deadly range to heavy shields or armor. If the fight does get up close and personal, he guides the narrow blade of his rapier to a vital spot, such as the eye or heart, before his foe can take advantage of his light armor.
Strangeways' intolerance for imbecilic order and the pointless routine of rigid law tends to make him irritable when he has spent to long in the city and a flight from the stupidity of men and their societies drives him to his long sojourns in the wilderness as much as his devotion to Desna.
Sorry for the late reply- had some stuff come up unexpectedly. I like the fluff details on your ranger; what kind of animal companion are you thinking of getting?
I am not sure if the Pathfinder Society's Pre-Generated characters are up to par, but don't be afraid to take along some level 4 variants if you feel like you need help with creating your character. Showing a willingness to want to learn the game is just as important as being there to play it. After all, it's your first time playing the game- it doesn't hurt to have read the rules and campaign setting (as it seems you have- still haven't read the official campaign setting myself ><), but nobody is expecting you to know the rules by heart. You should ask your DM for assist with finalizing your character before the game gets started, that way he can help you while everyone takes a break. Can you contact him before game day?
I'll post in my character later this evening - I can document the creation cycle no problem, so it might help you with yours. For now, some links!
3.75 RPG Character Generator: If you want to save characters, you need to buy a $7 code, but it is perfectly viable if you're transferring the numbers and such elsewhere.
Myth-Weavers: Create a free account, and you'll be able to create a whole slew of characters for different games. Pathfinder sheet is nice, and the sheet consists of auto-fill fields that'll remember numbers for you. Very handy to have if you want/need an internet sheet (it works well with an iPad, if you have one, but I'd assemble the character on something with a mouse).
Working on a new Ranger following the switch-hitter model. Alric may get adjsuted a bit and then go into the PFS campaign.
I'll post the new guy when he's ready and has revealed his name.
About the background reading for PFS--I have to say I was a little disappointed.
The world is so very, very slightly adapted from earth. There is a racial problem in the storyline and the scope of it's creator's imaginations and it shows in the Factions page at the front of the FIeld Guide.I guess this follows in the great tradition of Lord of the Rings, but hey, this is 2013. We can do better. It's also a little annoying that the good deities are all new inventions but the bad dieties are old names from the demonic hordes of the Abrahamic religions. Is this a deliberate attempt to tweak the Fundies who believe role-playing is a tool of the devil? Or are they just too stinking lazy and unimaginative to make up new baddies? In any case, I was a bit disappointed to find asmodeus and mephistopheles in there. Sauron, Saruman and Smaug were much more interesting.
