Yes its quite impressive. To think this is just the tip of the iceberg...heck no, a snowflake on the tip of the iceberg is mind-numbing awesome.

Currently, the only way to play Arena Commander, is by backing the game. When you back the game, you get a ship, and access to the alpha.
It's 40 dollars to buy an Aurora, which is the least expensive ship. Once Star Citizen is finished, you'll be able to buy the game at normal retail price, and you will no longer be able to purchase ships with real money. I hope that answers your question. :)

Thanks. When you say "Arena Commander", what do you mean? Is that a role / sub-game within Star Citizen?

This is a fan-made video using game assets and what seems to be cryengine player. Aka, this is not in-game footage but rather its game assets (ships, characters, etc) that were imported into the default cryengine player (much, much less graphic fidelity than the one the game uses) and then 'played' to make the film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wAOqjBZ6dc

Darn impressive still. This is exactly how the devs have said salvaging is going to be like.

Here's how it works:

CIG, the company making Star Citizen, is actually developing 4 games at once; all of them based on Star Citizen AND which function within Star Citizen.

Star Citizen: This is the 'full' game. This is the MMO game. All games listed below are part of the Star Citizen game. In Star Citizen terms, this is called the 'PU' (Persistent Universe).

Squadron 42: This is a stand-alone, single player game that is very similar to Wing Commander. You start off as a rookie pilot and through 60+ hours of gameplay and dynamic storyline paths, you become part of a lore-based fighter squadron inside the Star Citizen universe. At the end of this game, your character's military service enlistment time ends and you become a Citizen. You can think of this game as a full-game which is literally a tutorial for you to be able to play Star Citizen MMO.

FPS: This is first person shooter game aspect being developed which allows you to walk inside your ships, fly in space in a space suit, walk on planets, asteroids, etc. This is a 'module' of Star Citizen and it is found in Squadron 42 (you will have 'ground' missions in SQ42). Plans for the future include making FPS into a stand-alone game like Squadron 42 ... but instead of a fighter pilot you would be a Space Marine.

Arena Commander: This is a starship simulator game that exists inside the Star Citizen universe (and SQ42). The lore story is that it is like flight simulators today... companies make flight simulators so people can 'fly' them in their computers. In Star Citizen, your character can use Arena Commander 'game' to try out ships without having to buy them, play combat against friends without losing your ship and improve your skills. Arena Commander is a module that is currently being used in the Alpha test to iron out bugs, ship designs, flight model, etc.

The game currently offers ship packages which include the ship, the full game download (including Squadron 42 and Star Citizen) that you can access once the game is finished, and access to the alpha or beta test. Alpha access is no longer sold as part of the game packages because we are already in Alpha... so packages come with Beta access that will allow you to play the game during Beta (estimated mid-2015).

However, you can purchase access to the alpha test by buying the 'Arena Commander Pass' $5 . This gives you access to the alpha test. This Pass is not going to be sold all the time... it is simply a means for them to be able to control how many new players can access the Alpha (for server stress test and netcode testing). Aka they dont want to still offer people game packs with alpha and then suddenly have to stop selling the game packs because they need to pull the alpha access off based on their needs.

If you want to access the game now you can do either:

1- Pledge for a ship package you like AND purchase the $5 arena commander pass.
or
2- Purchase the Aurora Arena Commander Starter Package which includes the Aurora startship and arena commander pass as well as SQ42 download and Star Citizen download. Its the best price at $45

Here:

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pled ... er-Starter

With that pack you can install the game and fly your ship in the alpha test.

Arena Commander, also known as the "Dogfight Module" is a simulator that allows you to fly around, race, and dogfight.
Think of Arena Commander as the game within the game. :)

Star Citizen is being built in modules.

The Hanger Module, where you can walk around, look at your ships, and equip them. Already released.

The Dogfight Module, (Arena Commander) which I've already explained. You enter Arena Commander from inside your hanger, by putting on a virtual reality helmet.
Already released, of course.

The First Person Shooter (FPS) Module. Exactly what it says on the tin. :P In production.

The Planetside Module, also known as the "Social Module." This will allow you to interact with other players, and trade on a planet's surface.
In production.

Squadron 42. This is the single player campaign, in the style of the Wing Commander series of games. In production.

Persistant Universe. This will combine all of the previous modules, into one massive game universe. When this gets released, the game will be ready for retail. It's still in the concept stage, and not yet in production.

I suggest you subscribe to "Roberts Space Industries" on YouTube, and visit the website by the same name. :)

We can't wait to play it either. We're building new gaming computers in February so hopefully we can have an optimal gaming experience <3

It's totally awesome. 8)
It was also exciting to see the Redeemer gunship, from The Next Great Starship competition.
Player created content at this stage of development, is practically unheard of in any other game.

Ugh. This looked interesting until "FPS". Feh.

Still looks impressive, might be at least somewhat amusing to watch friends play it, but.... yeah, the only response I have to "yet another damn FPS" is "ugh". Or something that has enough FPS in it to be a major part of the game. Unless the FPS bit can be skipped (completely) or ignored without impacting other parts? Somehow I doubt that though.

I dont suppose anyone knows of any other good space sim/whatever games that are upcoming (or already out)? Specifically games that are absolutely anything that isnt an FPS. I've seen hardly anything of that sort recently.

That's like not wanting to eat at a burger place, because they also happen to serve ice cream.
FPS is not the core of Star Citizen. It's as easy to avoid FPS in the game, as it is to avoid picking up a gun in real life. No one will force you to do it. In no way does FPS combat, detract from the other elements of the game. It simply adds variety for those who enjoy fighting outside their ship. If given the choice between more options (even ones that don't personally appeal to me) and less options, I'll choose more options every time.

Hmmm, if it really can be completely ignored at all times (and I really mean never doing it even once, as I hate the modern FPS genre THAT much), then it's not as much of a problem. Maybe. Though, my suspicion with something like this is that enough development time spent on that means not as much elsewhere (which is a huge part of my problem with something like this).... typically I'm better off just finding something else in a case like this that just doesnt have this element to begin with. Buuuuuut, feh, there really arent much in the way of good space games out right now. Though, THIS one also looks so far off that there may be more by the time it's playable (playable beyond the damn FPS element).

I may vaguely keep an eye on it if I dont forget about it at least, though I'm glad I heard about all of this before doing something like pre-ordering or whatever. For now I'll just drop this one and go look elsewhere.

FPS is an integral part of the game but it is not the main core of it.

You can be a pure pilot and hardly ever pick up a gun or use FPS combat. The only time where you'd be 'forced' into it is if your ship gets disabled and the enemy decides to board your ship. You can fight or surrender it's up to you.

The single player game Squadron 42 does include some FPS-centric missions.

Found a cool and easy DIY mounting setup for a chair.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=12745

That setup is so much easier compared to most other DIY's mounting setups that I've seen.

Can't wait to build my cock-pit. I'll probably do this soonish for Elite dangerous, although I'll probably hold off on that game till sometime late next year since they still seem to have a ways to go before the game is 'there', judging by feedback on their forums and on reddit.

Now I want to buy a chair that can really lean back.

I'm waiting too, and Elite seems like an interesting alternative for the time being. I'll use my RSeat RS1. All I need is brackets, the Thrustmaster HOTAS, and MFG Crosswind pedals (if I can afford them).
