I think the day and age had a lot to do with it, too. Videogames practically started with arcade games, which were made difficult on purpose in order to earn more money...I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this, with most console games at the time being either arcade ports, or inspired by arcade games.

Many old-school arcade style games have abusable mechanics that must be exploited in order to survive. The arcade Double Dragon for example, is virtually impossible to complete with one credit unless the reverse elbow smash is mercilessly abused. The AI can't handle it, it does more damage, etc. The computer really has no answer for it.
