I expect gamers to whine non-stop that E3 doesn't show 100 percent games they love. People still don't get the concept of E3- its for the big names more than the indies. There is plenty of indie events all year, why must E3 instantly change to indie stuff because people whine? People just need something to complain about. Don't watch it- PROBLEM SOLVED! Do stuff you enjoy.
Anyway.. I don't usually watch E3 much. Better announcements and reveals happen a ton at other times in the year. Plus I don't follow many new games anymore.
The same can apply to Japanese games in that they don't get the spotlight (bar a few exceptions) and you have to go to other events to find out about them. I'm not expecting Sony's E3 conference to feature games like Senran Kagura but at the same time some diversity outside of Square Enix would be a plus. Not everything is just AAA Western and indie in the games industry.
Plus, when you're really wanting a game to get translated that dosen't for whatever reason, then you'll understand one reason why people get upset about their most wanted games not appearing.
Alright- I stand corrected: AAA, niche titles (not always indie) and indies. Either way.. people don't understand what E3 is, so they complain anyway. There is zero good reason for E3 to spotlight indy stuff, because one of the purposes of E3 is to showcase the more mainstream (AAA games mainly).. its how its usually been! Sure they could change, but why? Like I said before- there is plenty of conventions for indie games and the rest.
Let's just guess here- if E3 spotlighted everything, how could they reasonably do it? If they did a little bit of each type of game each day.. I guess it could work. But realistically- I doubt E3 will be the event niche and indie game fans like a lot. I still stand firmly by my "complain to complain" quote above. People act like gaming is horrible because of this or that, but its not hard to focus on the stuff you like.
They arent forcing you to watch. They arent forcing you to buy the games you don't like. (This is similar to how people bash movies they've never seen, just over how the plot looks or the actors or whatever). Fine- watch E3 for what you want, but don't act surprised if it has a lot of junk in it you dont want. Ignore that stuff and move on. Its a simple concept.
Fair play. Even a sizzle real of Japanese games coming west could work though. XSEED are localising Trails of Cold Steel II, which would be a good thing to spotlight. Likewise, Fate/Extella. Or a bit of everything - ask localisers to ocme on and show their latest stuff, or some of the Japanese devs/pubs even host their own conferences. Like Kadokawa Games. They'll be hosting a conference at the same time as E3 and their lineup of in progress games is perhaps the most interesting to the niche market. Root Letter and God Wars look awesome.
With regards to TGS, I watched last years conference and there was a wide range of games unveiled. One Piece: Burning Blood, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Yakuza: Kiwami were all announced. There was a good amount of Western content too. I recall Call of Duty even made an appearance. The vast majority are Japanese, with Western content peppered here and there. Heck, Genkai Tokki Moero Crystal (a very niche fanservice game) was revealed to be getting an Asian English/Chinese release in Sony's Asian conference, and that was in a stream of a ton of other Western and Japanese games. How it should be.
I would argue E3 should be similar, but with Western content taking the lead (obviously due to the market) and Japanese content peppered and available. And I don't just mean Japanese developed games with what some would consdier a Western aesethic (ie. Dark Souls). I mean a wide range, from Persona/Dragon Quest to even some moe games (like the Touhou Project games coming to PS4/Vita and almost anything by Compile Heart).
People have spent the last 10 years going to E3 to see the new Call of Duty and Ubisoft game(s).
XSeed doesn't get much coverage and attendance at their booth when they've been at E3.
Xseed being niche, it doesn't interest the Westerners at all.
The biggest booths in attendance and press coverage are always:
Activision (not at E3 this year)
EA (not at E3 this year)
Ubisoft (Tons of free stuff given here and tickets to the big after party)
Sony (SCEA does it and makes sure it damn well focused on content the U.S. wants. They also give lots of free stuff and tickets to the big after party).
Microsoft (Tons of free stuff given here and tickets to the big after party)
Nintendo (the have normally have the biggest amount of playable demos)
Hell Activision when at E3 had one of the highest booth attendance, even though they just showed a reel of the new Call of Duty footage and giving away Call of Duty swag.
Nintendo is the only true Japanese company with Japanese content to get decent booth attendance, even though they are way behind the rest of the companies I listed.
To be fair Nintendo doesn't give away much free stuff and they don't do a big adult after party for the press like the other companies do.
Nintendo will probably be laughed out of E3 regardless of what they show by press and attendees because they don't like E rated colorful games being at E3.
Nintendo has been laughed out of the past 12 E3s for being too "kiddie" and "casual".
This is very likely this is the last year Nintendo shows at E3.
The other Japanese developers and publishers including Sega, Atlus, Capcom, Square-Enix etc... tend to be skipped in favor of Western content.
I mean Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft and Activision typically do huge after parties with alcohol, gourmet food, hot easy women for sex, etc...
This is why the press loves them and gives them all that positive coverage (required to get in).
After E3 the next major gaming Conference/show is Paris Games Week next month and Gamescon in Germany (August) which as big as E3.
TGS is September which is as big as E3, followed by PAX in October (U.S. show, though only Nintendo, Atlus and a few smaller companies show) then Fighting Game tourney in November in the U.S., followed by
PS Experience in December where Sony promises to show Japanese content coming to the U.S. Sony claims they have been told over the years, that E3 is for American stuff by the attendees and press and not to bother with Japanese content.
