Originally I was a Killer/Explorer. I was the one lying wait in Stranglethorn (WoW level area) for the unwary to camp and kill 3-4 times. Funner if they brought a main and I killed it too. I was troll in pvp.. But it just got tiring after a while.

I got in to RP a few years ago When an expansion called going rogue came out in a Hero MMO City of Heroes and then slowly phased to a Achiever/Socializer in my other games.
I swore off pvp this year to balance out some. I was getting to be to much a troll.

Probably close to center. My FAVORITE part is probably the killer aspect, but I do NOT spend most of time doing that. In fact I hardly spend ANY time doing that in my time playing an MMO. I spend most TIME playing as being an achiever. I don't play WoW anymore or other MMO's really because they have all seemed to be streamlined into 'move from point A on mini map to point B on mini map', which completely ruins the reason for having an MMO in the first place, and this applies to me having a DESIRE to explore. The social aspect of an MMO is probably my least favorite part, but when I have a couple drinks I was not an unknown entity in chat, and quite frankly I couldn't stand raiding with anyone but the guild I was in because I knew them all and I'd become known to them.

Essentially, ALL parts of what makes an MMO good are those 4 aspects for me. Without achievement there is no play, without social there is little to bring me back to group achievements since random people are a**holes on the internet, the killing is just fun fun fun, and the exploring is what makes the whole thing immersive and desirable and cool in the first place.

I chose explorer simply because without that aspect I simply do not have attraction to the game so everything becomes kind of moot, and that is what brought me in. It is what will bring me into a VR MMO when one is made also.

There is a quiz for it here.

http://4you2learn.com/bartle/

Achiever: 40%
Explorer: 47%
Griefer: 80% (teehee)
Socializer: 33%

Games are where I'm ALLOWED to be a griefer, because being one IRL just means you're a f*****g a**hole.

I once told someone who asked me that the boat from menethil habor to the other continent was the one on that middle dock...the boat that's just scenery and doesn't move, but that it only goes every hour. I felt bad and told them otherwise in 5 minutes.

Even in board games, if I've found out I'm likely to lose I will often pick a target who pissed me off earlier in the game and make it so they can't win...

Don't put me in games that have friendly fire on.

None of people who have played Risk with me trust me with alliances anymore.

I'm smiling just THINKING of being a griefer. Alright, changing my poll answer.

The amount of time I would follow a random person around doing /taunt with my female gnome rogue; good times.

Why am I not surprised that I'm still the only one who voted "socializer"?

In truth, I don't care much for this system; I think it's a bit too... dichotomous. I do find it intriguing though in that it's very similar to a typology used to describe players' motivations in another sort of game I play; Magic: the Gathering.

"Spike" is equivalent to Killer/Achiever, "Johnny" to Explorer, and "Timmy" to Socializer. It's intriguing to me that these systems both have such similar categories.

Oh, I'm re-reading what you wrote, and I guess I misread it. Yeah, the article is all culled from knowledge he gained from interacting with other players in the game, and from postings on the BBS.

The game is called MUD, Multi-User Dungeon; "Dungeon" being the original name for what became the Zork trilogy, which it is heavily inspired by. I'm actually playing MUD2, which is a greatly expanded version of the original game.

It's pretty interesting to see people apply the article to newer games, when a lot of it doesn't really apply anymore. That game was a lot more like a multi-player interactive fiction, and gaming has changed a lot in the 36-38 years since it came out. The closest I can think of is maybe some of the PVP in Rust, or maybe some movies like Battle Royale or The Hunger Games.

Another explorer here.

LOL, i get the same feeling when i have explored an MMO. I played Entropia Universe when it came out, created a map of the entire game world, then got bored. I explored the entire map of Horizons and quit, same with SWG.

I've also tried the other "roles", even got my own guild in EQ2 (which has fallen into ruins, checked a month ago) and one of my WoW characters was a notorious nub ganker in STV, but what keeps me going is exploration, exploration and yes - exploration. I love finding stuff that no one or at least most players has never seen before. in ESO i found a place that sold ingredients REALLY cheap so i could maximise my alchemy skill in just 2 days, just because i took the time to explore the game.

Only MMO i've been playing a balanced role (even reached rank of Faction counsellor) was Neocron 2 (which is community driven since the company went bankrupt).

Probably somewhere between explorer and killer.

I took that test.

I got Explorer 80%, Socialiser 60%, Achiever 53%, Griefer 7%.

I'm surprised socialiser came out ahead of achiever. I would think I'd be more achiever than socialiser. No surprise with the griefer rating. But is the killer supposed to be a griefer? I thought killer while including griefing, would also involve fighting and killing other players in clean competition. Also, the questions weren't really about griefing. Just fighting with other players and getting an edge over them. So I think someone who enjoys contending with human opponents but not griefing could get a high griefer rating on this test.

I'm primarily an Explorer, with a bit of achiever and socializer mixed in, i mostly play for fun, usualy the first thing i do is look around for explore, mostly to find easier ways to do things. moving on towards achieving once i hit the level cap or get near it, socializing while i do the previously mentioned tasks, only games i find myself drawn towards the killer archetype i guess is in games like GTA online (it's pretty much expected), Defiance, and SWBF2 (went by SGT.Striker in that game) But mostly it's when someone starts attacking low level players in an mmo while i'm nearby, that people quickly find out how easily i can wreck them if i decide to attack in the defense of another player.

after taking the test i found my results to be Explorer 87%, Socializer 73%, Achiever 27%, and Griefer 13%. the question regarding being the most feared in the game i've actually been there and done that before, not as much fun as people think it is. Star Wars Battlefront 2 i went by the name of SGT.Striker someone of my best friends IRL fought me without knowing it and still hate that username though i never bring up it was me...

technically im a killer BUT for a different reason.

I kill other players FOR the achievement, a player that isn't a challenge isn't worth killing, luckily im not very good haha.

it probably stems from my lack of feeling like ive achieved anything in my life so being able to win sort of fills that void, though as im getting older im sort of losing my taste for pvp and getting more into the explorer/achiever type i guess, which is a good thing, because im better at that.

i took the quiz and it said
achiever 33%
explorer 67%
griefer 47%
socializer 53%

weird...
although when i think about it, the goals i have are not usually the same as the main goals of the game, they fall more in line with "exploring" the game.

Explorer/achiever. I seem to get on the nerves of more fast-paced players because I take my time and look at everything. I get nervous when other people watch me for this reason

I'm definitely more of an explorer than anything, and also a completionist.

I've never played MMO games much at all, but in every Zelda game I play, I have a lot of fun trying to find every single piece of heart and secret there is in the game.

These are my results from the 4you2learn Bartle test:
Achiever: 33%
Explorer: 93%
Griefer: 27%
Socializer: 47%

I am a big explorer as I've already established, but my secondary player type is probably killer because I have some RTS games, I'm always in competition with my killer brother, and I do enjoy a few games designed mostly for killers.

I would say I'm an explorer (although I also like to know where I'm supposed to go in a game and I'm not bothered by obstacles that keep me in one particular area until I have achieved a specific goal, like beating a gym leader or finishing requests before I can move on), with some elements of achiever. According to the test Cavernio linked to, it was a tie between explorer and achiever.
I like exploring, I like gaining EXP and useful items, I like fighting and I like getting really into the story line.
When I was younger, I had a significant part of killer to my gaming, but that has lessened with age.
