Pokemon has evolved over time, Generation 1 & 2 were completely different from what Pokemon is now in Generation 5 & 6. I remember getting my first Pokemon game when I was 11 years old, it was Pokemon Yellow and I loved it. Then Gold & Silver came out and one of my friends had it, he let me try it and I saw how much the game had changed just from the first to the second generation.
Now compare that to what Pokemon is like today, held items, berries, natures, abilities, double and triple battles. The game has changed so much since then.
I was there when they announced Generation 6, and to be quite honest, I thought it looked amazing, but I don't think It's my kind of game. I prefered the earlier generations (1, 2 & 3), though I do still collect games, I have Red & Blue all the way up to Black & White, but I mostly play Generations 1, 2 & 3.
The first game I played was generation 2 but I rented Pokemon Yellow later. I didn't actually own a game prior to gen 2. I didn't really get into it at first and I missed gen 3. I later played it on an emulator though. After that I got into it again towards the end of gen 4 and I've been into it since then but I don't see much being added besides a few gimmicks lately. The dreamworld was introduced and that gave pokemon access to new abilities but it didn't feel like much of an improvement to me.
In gen 2 there wasn't as much emphasis on story but that's what I was used to. I did find it nice when I played Emerald on an emulator and it was a little bit more colourful. I don't mean that in terms of graphics. Team magma and aqua were more interesting than team rocket. The submarine gets stolen, there's an underwater search you have to conduct, and in general more seems to happen in that game.
I also liked gen 4 because it just seemed more interesting in terms of the themes, emphasis on myth, and plot.
I realize the games became more like epics and that's different. I don't think it's necessarily better. I don't think it's worse either it's just different and it was a nice change.
Gen 5 was the biggest disappointment for me. Team plasma was boring. Other than the gameplay which is always similar the storyline just seemed so bland.
I liked gold because of the game's world map. The environment just seemed more open to me. Maybe it was because there were caves you didn't have to explore and parts of slowpoke well that you could go to optionally. You never had to go into the whirlpool islands. You never had to go into the tower (I forget what it was called). The unown ruins were optional. There was so much extra stuff to do in the game and there were places where you could just take a look around. There are still places like that in gen 5 but it seems like there are fewer.
The multiplayer is the one thing that maintains its value no matter what but I usually want a good game to go with it. I don't want to just buy the game to maintain access to a wide range of pokemon strictly for multiplayer. The game has to have something in it and to me gen 5 had absolutely nothing.
