Let's see, I had an absolutely EPIC game as Castille where I united Spain, conquered all of Europe, colonized the New World, and conquered as far east as the Caucasus. I then reloaded that save as the Ming and pushed as far as I could West, and then jumped back to Spain to fight the most ridiculous clash of nations in the history of the world. That was fun.
I like Poland, but it is ridiculously difficult in the beginning, due to the Mongols, but if you can keep them in check, it's got a great position to expand west and east. You just have to maintain an enormous army, since you have no natural defenses. Conquering the Hansa early is good, to have the best trade center in the world.
I've had some good times as Holland and Brabant, both to build the Netherlands and then operate as a pure trade/colonial power. Got a great trade center on Amsterdam to help. An early alliance with Burgundy helps, and, as per history, an alliance with Britain is a must, until colonial interests interfere.
I've also had some good times playing as non-European powers. Trying (and failing) to build up the Cherokee to be an empire capable of withstanding the Europeans was a unique experience. My favorite for this kind of thing was... I can't remember which, but one of the Indian nations. I actually conquered Britain, Holland, and Portugal, which wasn't easy, but played into my odd sense of humor.
So take your pick. If you go eastern european, then you've got the Golden Horde to worry about. Alliances will make all the difference here. Also, the golden horde's troops are many, but weak. A good sized European army with a good commander will wipe the floor with them. The problem, of course, being the expense, as you have to advance slowly and build forts to prevent their little one unit armies from reconquering everything you take.
Cool! Thank you for the info. Based on what you said, I will have to give Poland a try.
I have a few more questions if you don't mind.
Ever played the Ottomans? If so, do you (or anyone else) have any advice with them?
In my current game, I am playing England. Of course I have a large navy. How do you handle a large navy when it comes to keeping older tpyes of vessels and replacing them with more modern ones? Is it a prority for you to replace older ship designs with newer ones?
I have not used the espionage system of the game much. To me, it seems to much of a hit or miss and when it comes to a budget, I'd rather know where my monies are going such instead of a chance of something happening. Any advice regarding the espionage side of the game?
Thanks!
Crusader Kings 2: The Old Gods looks like it will be yet another major upgrade for CK2. That's....4 major upgrades (not including "Sunset") in a little over a year? Looks like Paradox and Johan have figured out how to print money.
Oh...and EU4.....

The Ottomans are at the height of their power at the Beginning of the game, but don't go the historical route. Hold off the Byzantines as best you can, and pick around the edges, but once you have enough war score, don't conquer them. Try to isolate them with treaty nullifications and such and keep them weak. Meanwhile, push east and south slowly. The problem with this is that you get more badboy conquering fellow muslims. The upside is that you don't have to spend all of your time dealing with religious revolts. Don't worry about colonization, go for tolerance, army, or trade ideas, for money, power, and not having to deal with bloody religious uprisings. Meanwhile, convert as many byzantine provinces as you can, then hit them. Same deal once you hit India.
As far as a Navy... I usually maintain an absolutely Massive fleet in the channel, patrolling from Land's End up to the Burgundy coast. Then I surround the Islands with little three ship patrols for piracy, and one that goes up along the coast of Denmark. I also post an additional ten ship squadron from Dingle to Land's End. You'll never be invaded.
The trick to upgrading is to do so while you're at peace. Delete a ship and build a ship. With the pirate hunter squadrons, set up the build queue in three separate provinces, then when they get close to being built, delete the old patrol. Never have a patrol cover more than three adjacent zones.
Espionage is useless, unless you're playing a long game against a nation, like I suggested against the Byzantines above. Inciting riots and posting clerics are good ways to weaken a government. Also, if you're gonna take a province, forging a claim is a good way to avoid trouble. Unfortunately, with it being very expensive and having limited chances, then only do it if you selected the free spies option at the beginning and have a good spymaster advisor.
Crusader Kings 2: The Old Gods was released yesterday(?), and while prelim reviews are mixed, I played it, and it's pretty much a brand new game on par with The Republic.
No release date yet for EU4.
