Still looks impressive, might be at least somewhat amusing to watch friends play it, but.... yeah, the only response I have to "yet another damn FPS" is "ugh". Or something that has enough FPS in it to be a major part of the game. Unless the FPS bit can be skipped (completely) or ignored without impacting other parts? Somehow I doubt that though.
I dont suppose anyone knows of any other good space sim/whatever games that are upcoming (or already out)? Specifically games that are absolutely anything that isnt an FPS. I've seen hardly anything of that sort recently.
How about EVE Online?
An update on this game:
The core components and technologies for this game are almost complete. As of this moment they are integrating first person, space flight and multiplayer into one product. All previous accessible and shown content has been using default crytengine placeholders and barebones star citizen specific coding.
Here is a demo video showing the alpha version of first person, space flight and multiplayer merged into one:
Key thing to keep in mind is that this game is to be played 100% as first person view. This means that when you board a ship, you do not become the ship, you are your avatar controlling the ship. As you can see in the video, the players in first person go from being inside a space station to outside the station to boarding their ships to being in the cockpit/turret view mode... SEAMLESSLY with no loading screens or delays.
The only times you will see a 'break' in the seamless transitions is when the player uses a ladder or enters a cockpit/sits in a chair...because right now those transitions are just animations that are placeholders/barebones work done to them. These 'breaks' are like your character's view 'snapping a foot away' or instant-turning 180. The finished product will be one where the transition is natural and fluid from first person view.
If you look from the outside of a ship that is in flight and you see avatars inside that ship, sitting or moving around...that's not an eye candy animation...its actually players inside and you can see what the players do. No other game before has been able to achieve this.
The video shows players crewing a ship, engaging in combat in space, doing EVA, repairing the ship (the magic repair beam drones will be replaced by actual EVA avatars repairing it...and the repair mechanic/mini-game will be very involved since there will be a 'mechanic/engineer' career path... the magic repair drones are just a placeholder) and then getting ambushed when on foot at an abandoned station.
Note for misery: Those of you who hate first person shooter play (and i'm one of them) you can see that you don't HAVE to leave your ship. You can simply send in your friends who do like it while you remain in the ship...heck you couldve even provided fire support with your ship's guns if you could fly to where the windows were
