I don't often play as many people I know don't play. I do play at times when I'm on the internet but not that often.

I like to play chess once-and-a-while...

I absolutely HATE playing "Yahoo! Chess" because people use "bots" (I think that's what you would call them) to "cheat" so that they maintain almost perfect ratings! :x

I do, however, own a copy of Chessmaster: 10th Edition for my PC. You can either play against one of the 20 or so computer players of various skills & abilities or play online against other players. The game automatically keeps track of your chess rating. I have found that at any given time, there are seem to only be about 10 other users on the "game server" besides me.

If you're interested in trying the game out, you can DL a demo HERE.

BTW, it's also available for the XBOX as well...

I like chess.
I don't play it very often though.
I'm not at all very good, but I've been told that I can be quite interesting.

Yes, it is interesting. I read that it can increase your IQ. How is that possible? I don't know. Maybe it exercises the brain. I also read and was told that Mozart increases the IQ. I'm really not sure how that is possible. Does anyone know? So, does anyone know of some good software for playing 3d chess over the internet?

In answer to your questions:

There have been many surveys (often with dubious methodology) claiming that chess makes kids smarter. I spend most of my life teaching chess to kids whose parents believe this - and have also written an interactive chess teaching website for kids.

It's also been claimed that listening to Mozart makes kids smarter but with little real evidence.

What exactly do you mean by playing 3D chess over the internet? Do you mean playing three-dimentional chess on a three-dimentional board (8x8x8 squares) or playing boring old two-dimensional 64-square chess using 3D graphics?

Do you want to play against humans or software? In real time or by email? If you can explain exactly what you want to do I can probably advise you.

I like chess.

I've learnt to play just 8 months ago, and I don't play it frequently (because of homeworks and college projects :x ).
