Splatoon |OT| Wii U boxes covered in colors confirmed!
....do I even want to know what that means?
Hentai (and it's variations) is fine and all, but yeah.... sometimes it gets just a bit TOO weird.
If you don't know, then you really don't want to know....

Bah, nobody ever does events at midnight or such as that.
I'll be asleep for that one, likely. Or having just woken up maybe.
Maybe it'll produce more vids to watch though. Already this is one of those games where even just watching it is entertaining. Though alot of games that have some sort of heavy competitive modes are like that.
Okay, so, have you guys seen the ranked mode stuff for this yet?
I'm getting the impression there'll be multiple modes within ranked, but for the one they showed... it doesnt look to me to be at all as interesting as the main mode. Extremely typical "capture tiny point, hold it" sort of thing. And yes, you have to actually cover it in ink to hold it, not just stand on it, which would make it more interesting.... if the zones werent downright TINY. So far in what they've shown, map awareness/knowledge doesnt look like it even applies in this, as there doesnt appear to be a point in doing anything other than making a beeline for that zone (which again, is tiny; it's not hard to know what that zone is like), and because the zones are so tiny, you need only know the small surrounding area, as ALL of the combat will happen there (everything I've seen so far has exactly ONE such zone at a time on the entire map).
So yeah, that's my impression... it looks rather generic to me, with the capture + "shoot all the dudes" idea. And to me, a big part of the entire point of playing this game to begin with is to get AWAY from those generic concepts.
REALLY hoping that's not the only mode in ranked.
If any of you have seen it, what are your thoughts on it?

They did show off another mode for ranked in the Splatoon focused Direct. I don't recall the name of it, but it's a take on CTF where you ride on a tower ( the "flag" so to speak ). Small area with very little you can do to avoid getting killed, and the outer part of the area you're on is grating so you have to be careful when you go squid form to refill ink. You have to stay on as long as possible to get the tower to move to your team's base, and the rest of your team needs to back you up; no teamwork, no points.
They also hinted at other modes coming after launch, in addition to new weapons, gear and multiplayer stages all as free updates.

I think Splatoon looks really cool, I'm just a little worried about the new game modes and important functions like match making not being available right away. I still put down 5 for the preorder months ago but I'm not sure if I'll pick it up day one or at all because I'm thinking about putting money towards getting a PS4 soon. I still might give in though and pick up splatoon around launch I let you all know if I do.

Hmm. I suppose we wont entirely know till it comes out, I guess.
Both of those modes though, I'll probably ignore, neither sounds very interesting to me. Of course, they may surprise me, but I'm doubting it. Well, the "zones" one would need a HUGE change in mechanics to manage that, at any rate, which isnt likely to happen.
I'd wondered about the game mode thing myself, but having listened to them talk about it, the reasons they gave do make alot of sense to me, I can agree with their ideas on that.
.....also, apparently you need to hit certain ranks to access new modes ANYWAY (as in, new players will probably have to do this regardless even if they buy the game like, 6 months later), so one way or another, you'd be levelling up a bunch before doing those.
They're trying to ensure that there's a more balanced field in the early days of the game, rather than the lumpy mess that many multiplayer games become when ranks are jumped too fast by certain groups early on.
Yeah, it sounds a little weird, but... it's Nintendo, there's always a bit of weird. And frankly the game looks so darn fun that as far as I'm concerned, they can be as blasted strange about it as they want, really. Fine by me!
On another note, looking further into the other multiplayer modes... hmmm, I think I see a bit more of what they're going towards with those (well, the zones one anyway seems very different indeed when there's more than one damn zone!).
Ugh, and the game is still... what, like, 10 days away? Ugh.
The second mode is defend the tower that will be available at launch.
Also matching making by rank will also be available at launch as well
Ranks are determined by leveling with A+ being the best.
There is also a 1v1 local multiplayer where one person uses the gamepad and the other uses the other controller.
By the end of August the other modes will be out as well the other maps.
This patch will also feature match making with friends (launch is random team assignments when playing with friends, as in your teams are random with your friends).
New weapons and such will be released every other week.
The single player mode is true single player (no bots and multiplayer maps) with over 28 distinct levels where you unlock stuff. It also has lots of boss battles.
It is supposed to take quite a few hours to complete.

Well it's good to hear that they have a set schedule; though if they DIDNT I'd be surprised. Not exactly a confused new dev/publisher here, heh. The every other week bit is news to me, I'll have to try to keep that in mind.
The singleplayer looks interesting, I've seen a little bit of it, though not much, as obviously there's restrictions on how much can be shown by those that have received an early copy for that purpose. But it looks good. Havent seen the boss fights at all though I know there's vids of some.
Now if I could just get people I know to play it with me.... well, specifically, play it and NOT just randomly stop after 2 weeks and go back to endlessly playing whatever RPG is the big thing right now, ugh. Only games I can get friends to actually STICK with are fighting games, and that's IT. Kinda irritating.
Okay, because this is just.... so damn stupid... I have to wave this one around.

I've seen ALOT of people complaining about that commercial, and I can definitely see why. I mean, just.... it... argh. I could ramble on, and on, and on about what's wrong with this commercial in terms of marketing and design, but there's already lots of others that have already done it.
Fortunately, while alot of people are going "ARGH THATS SO DUMB, NINTENDO WHY U DO DIS??!?!?", they seem to follow it up with ".... but I'm buying it anyway BECAUSE AWESOME. But that commercial is still stupid". Which has pretty much been my own response.
Also fortunately, Nintendo has done everything ELSE right in pushing this game, so that's good. ...doesnt make this specific thing any less bloody stupid.
Also, I cant help but notice that THE GAME ISNT FREAKING OUT YET.
I dunno about the rest of you, but I find that waiting for a game I'm quite excited about is freaking torture. The Binding of Isaac Rebirth's "Afterbirth" expansion is having the same effect on me. It's like, sure, there's lots of other games I can play right now.... but I want to play THOSE. At least with Isaac it's just an expansion, and I already have the current version of Rebirth.

Okay, that is pretty awful. My gut tells me that it is a commercial purely made to attract kids, with a stupid catchy tune, especially since they use the word "kid". But on the flipside, that word is also poison for how they have marketed to a wide audience.
I still feel that the definitive trailer is still the E3 trailer, and the saddest bit feels like they actually took parts from it to make that commercial. I think the real difference is focus, perhaps because it was longer the E3 trailer was able to communicate a lot more. Right away by pure visuals it introduces us to 3 parts: ink, squid, Inkling, before it throws it into conflict. I think what I love about the game is that it is incredibly a by visual game, the only words we hear is "Splatoon", it is not driven into your head it purely accompanies the action, and the music with its own gibberish like Splatoon language. Some people see the simlish language thing to be a thing of the past of restrictions that Banjo Kazooie and that Zelda should move away from, but I am adamant that it actually is very useful in a sort of "all the ages" sort of thing.
Back to that commercial, I think that they looked at the three important parts, but kind of forgot that it was meant to be unbridled fun that anyone can get it on. In one aspect it might be good because they already have a huge adult fan base already who have seen the online stuff. The focus market they want to go after next is a tricky part, but something tells me the "kid" angle was not right, yes it rhymes with "squid", but what does that actually mean to some kid. Technically the Inklings are at least 14 (at least a teenager), and evidence actually points that in majority of cases kids actually try to do things for older groups, which is why you get so many young teenagers playing M rated shooters, and why you are scaring that segment of the audience by calling them kids. No one should even need to be told what they look like, the game is all about visuals.

Yeah, I agree.
Mostly what gets me is that Nintendo is usually pretty good about showing their games as being "for everyone", which is typically genuinely the case. People of all ages get into things like Pokemon or Mario Kart or Smash Bros. Yeah, there are ALWAYS those that see colorful games and go "ZOMG KIDDY" and wont touch them, but... EVERY game has that sort of detractor that has some screwball reason for not touching the game and who cannot be convinced otherwise. But yeah, focusing so much on the "kid" aspect in that commercial is... not the way for them to go. It goes against that "for everyone" image that they usually go with. And.... I have to wonder what led to that idea. And then I have to wonder if I even want to know.
....also it's just bloody annoying. That song, just.... ugh.
Oh, and I agree on the whole "Simlish" thing. I usually think it's hilarious. One of my favorite entertaining things in older Nintendo games was in Banjo-Kazooie, whenever Gruntilda would say.... absolutely anything. Didnt matter what it was that was being said, the voice instantly made it hilarious. And then the actual writing usually made it even more hilarious.
And yeah, that E3 trailer (which I'd not seen before now) really is alot better. Definitely more of the way it should be done.

Market Research has shown since the launch of 3DS and Wii U, that their is a lack of mindshare and marketing for kids and women from Nintendo.
Market Research also showed that Parents and Kids lack awareness of Nintendo new systems and games.
Splatoon was already labeled at last E3 by the mainstream and gaming press.
The game was already label to be the shooter for kids. The shooter for casuals and women.
The kidification of shooters by Nintendo etc...
Even with the recent demos, people still publish articles about how Splatoon is "made for kids" and how it isn't a real shooter.
You can also find articles debating whether Splatoon will lead to the casualization of shooters.
Nintendo only stands to gain by marketing the game to kids, since the game is already being dismissed based on it's colorful presentation.
This commercial will be aired during family and kids shows.
