From what I hear it is the pinnacle of PC gaming

From what I hear you can knock off a metal giant's head by throwing a small, rabbit-like creature at it.

I heard this and minecraft are kind of the same, true?

Only superficially.

But yes, dwarf fortress is awesome. mmm dwarf fortress. Don't forget to use Dwarf Therapist. It will save your day.

I played it a year or so ago, and while I can see it is very fun, I easily get bored with games like that and Minecraft (which I own) since I lack imagination and quickly run out of things to do.

I liked the idea of dwarf fortress but it is too finicky for me. Is there really a difference between yak leather, cow leather, goat leather, water buffalo leather, etc, etc... That and complicated crafting lines and goods supply and demand are too much. It can take you a couple weeks before you start getting into it (unless like you are imaginative). Also to be good at the game you have to live it, the learning curve is a steep, steep cliff.

It's also good if you give yourself challenges and handicaps and work on super-projects.

what is this game even about?, i've heard of it never cared enough to look into it.

So far so good. This game is epic.

I'm planning on making a shaft leading to hell and throwing elves in.

Funniest thing I've seen online is someone kidnapping merpeople and forcing them to breed, then butchering their children and harvesting their valuable bodyparts

That's how I was too. I'm glad I finally downloaded it.

I just got both my feet bitten off in the wilderness, I still managed to wound the beast and it fled.
I crawled back to town and retired from adventuring.
Good thing I gave myself high toughness that time.

They're very helpful, since DF is quite complicated.

Well, Dwarf Fortress is a graphical game, although using ASCII instead of pictures. You can get tilesets which let you play the game with regular graphics, and you can use visualizers like Stonesense or Overseer that render the game in 3D (although only a render, you still have to play the game in 2D)

Combine a tileset and a visualizer and the game is much easier to play IMHO. You can also get Dwarf Therapist, which is a program that lets you manage your dwarfs much more easily than in the game. I am by no means an expert on DF, I barely know anything about it; I'm just an avid gamer.
