Does the 3DS have to be off / closed in order to calculate "steps taken" feature in activity log . I notice when i am playing a game or have it open while walking it doesn't registar steps but this seems odd?

Yes, the 3DS has to be closed and in Standby mode.
Personally I think at times it fails to count every step. I can walk from my room to the bathroom and back, even I know it takes more than 12 steps.

Ok thanks , yeah i might as well buy a separate pedometer
