I'm finally going to take the plunge and get a console. But which one?
I like simulation and rpgs mostly and can't play first person shooters because of severe astigmatism (a defect in eye focusing)
Any recommendations? I realize I'm opening up a big can of worms here.

If you aren't into FPS games and prefer RPGs. I honestly think a handheld would do you better than a console. You would have more games to choose from. Do you have a DS/3DS yet? Because so many of the major exclusives on the home consoles, tend to be shooters these days. Everyone wants to play Halo or Call of Duty and every company is trying to clone them to make a quick buck.

Alternatively, if you do want a home console, I'd go back to the old stuff like the N64 and go from there.

You should wait a month for the Nintendo Wii-U to be released, and then get that.

Console: PS3. Free network service, tons of games, still pretty powerful.

Handheld: 1) ps vita: few games, but really powerful and it runs classic games. 2) nintendo 3ds: a lot of rpgs (vita has a lot of them too, from psp) and nintendo exclusives like mario etc.

I do think you'd be hapopy with any of the options above.

OR

Wait for wiiU... always a gamble though, buying consoles at launch... fewer games etc.

Don't buy a PS Vita, its not going to last. The PSP did poorly to begin with but the Vita is selling worse than the PSP ever did. Hell, in Japan, the PS Vita is selling slower than the Dreamcast did and we all know how that turned out. Might be worth picking one up once it tanks and hits bargain prices if there is any sort of homebrew scene for it.

A DS Lite/DSi though would give you access to the massive combined library of DS games as well as GBA games. Tons of games to choose from there.

As far as consoles though, a Wii might not be a bad choice. You'd be able to play any Wii or Gamecube game released, but more importantly it has the Virtual Console store. Lots of good classic NES, SNES, and Genesis games to choose from. Also I don't know how you feel about side-scrolling platformers, but I think everyone should play Super Metroid at some point in their life, and that is available on there.

Between the 360 and PS3, the PS3 probably has more games that would interest you, and as mentioned before has free online play if that is something you would use.

I disagree.

The PS Vita has a huge PSP library already, plus a lot of games I really enjoy: gravity daze, dokuro, mutant blob attack, persona 4, ragnarock online, uncharted, unit 13, escape plan... plus there's a very good lineup coming along (silent hill, soul sacrifice, assassin's creed...).

It's been selling less than expected, but it's far from tanking... I'm having a blast with mine :D

If you enjoy the games the ps vita and psp have to offer, it's already a viable option, IMO. If not, grab a 3ds, which is also fun!
