Will they ever have the technology to design a TITANIC open world video game where you can explore the entire planet like America, London and Africa etc etc etc?

Most likely, yes.

If you consider the rate of technological progress over the last 2 decades, it truly wouldn't surprise me if technology continues to improve and advance to the level where that becomes a possibility.

That said, it would be a different matter to consider whether technology will continue to be as afforable as it is presently ; making such a game available to the general masses.

Minecraft (the PC version) already does this, kinda, but It's not realistic, and it's randomly generated.

:-) I don't think that's what they were really meaning (although, I could be wrong ?)

In a slightly similar way though, 'We Love Katamari' lets you roll about in the world until your Katamari becomes so large that it's sucking in entire world continents.... before you project out into outer space, to guzzle up various planets and constellations. :-D

But yeah, LOL... it's not exactly the most realistic game ever.
;-) good fun, though ! !!

I think we already have the tech. I just don't know how much fun it would be to live in a virtual world. It's a big enough of a pain in the ass to live in this one.

We do have the tech, it just depends on how good you want the graphics to be, how realistic you want the details, and how many man hours it would take to put it all together.

Daggerfall is like that, but unfortunately the vast majority of the environment and NPCs were randomly generated. But still, it's about the largest game world ever created as far as I know.

Like someone above said, we could already create a game like that. The main reason that noone has, it that it would take a huge amount of manpower to put in all of that area, complete with a sufficient level of detail. And at the end of the day, how many people would really explore all of it? It's far more profitable for them to spend 1000 hours making a tiny city look top-notch and adding a really good plot, then spending 1,000,000+ hours making a realistic model of the eastern U.S. coastline.

That said it would be pretty cool. "Oh honey, it's raining outside, I don't want to go to the football game tonight! Let's just go on 'EpicWorld2: UBER continent' instead!"

We have the technology, but a game like that, would either be very repetitive or would take decades to produce and most likely fill up your entire hard drive. Quality over quantity.

I imagine that it wouldn;t be used as a game in the classic sense, but more as a useful means of promoting tourism - or a recreation tool perhaps.

well, consider artificial intelligence, and the development of technology in the 20th century. Here in 50 years, we may make a form of intelligence smarter than humans. Then, we could have it make us a world bigger than earth!

3 words: Dungeons and Dragons (not the MMO, but the Tabletop)
