today's big release was cloudberry kingdom. its main focus is randomly generated levels that get insanely hard. since they are random every time, they never run out. no 2 are alike!

i like it. it is pretty fun.

This game in particular was one of my highlights from E3. Out of all the demo kiosks, I think I spent the most time playing this one. I will let you in on a little secret the girl at the booth told me. Apparently, even the devs haven't beaten the game, and are offering a prize of $1000 if someone can. It sounds like a simple enough challenge, but if you have played this game for any length of time, you know how difficult it can get. The later levels can get insanely difficult. The fact that it's completely random doesn't help, because there's no way for anyone to learn the ins of outs of each stage, and post a faq. It's a challenge that will test even the top gamers out there, and though even the vast majority of those who have been gaming for a long time will not be up to that challenge, it is our charge as gamers to at least try, or at least, that's the way I look at it.

I saw this game on PSN last night. I didn't buy it, but it looked fun. Now that I hear it offers a nice challenge, I wanna try it.

Oh, you don't know the half of it. It starts off easy, so it won't be hard right away, but it gradually gets more difficult as you get to the later stages. I remember thinking this game was too easy at first, but that changed pretty quickly. The difficulty isn't quite like a singular slope though. It has peaks and valleys, but will generally get more difficult. It's not uncommon for, say, level 70 to be brutal, but for level 71 to be much easier by comparison. That's due to the random placement and quantity of traps and platforms.

I like this game for more than just its challenge though. It's just simple fun, and is easy to pick up for a short session, but has more than enough content to keep you playing for a long time, if you want to. It's all random, and there are quite a few different modes to play around with, including one where you can generate your own random stages. It's not a true, do it yourself level creator, but you can specify which environment you want, and which traps, as well as which power up your character has, and a stage will generate based on that. Theoretically, you can beat the game, but still have enough reason to come back for more.

there are 3 "help" options (that cost some crystals)

1. watch the computer do it

2. shows you the path you should take. has a circle that shows you how you should move

3. slow motion

even with these helps the game is still insanely hard. in the more brutal levels you will need to follow the path very precisely. it is almost impossible!

How does the gameplay compare to Spelunky? I am a huge fan of Spelunky, and the randomly-generated levels with the intense difficulty. I'm just curious because if Cloudberry Kingdom is anything similar, I may have to buy it.

Not even remotely similar.

Cloudberry is the "EXTREEEEEEEEEEEME" platformer sort, the kind where you die 2 billion times per level and must execute super pixel-perfect jumps with perfect timing over and over again. Think Kaizo Mario or something like Super Meat Boy. Except randomly generated and with a bunch of other features. This one though has extremely varying levels of difficulty; you can generate levels that are of a more "normal" difficulty, or even super easy ones if you like.
