As many studies have implied before, it depends on the type of video game. They should try a 2D game.

"Video games" come in all shapes and sizes. I grew up playing PC games that were, now that I think about it, basically just maths and programming homework. Castle of Dr Brain, The Incredible Machine, The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis.....

And now I'm a weird geek who loves maths and programming. Coincidence? You decide.
