Up until about a year ago, yes. I think the recent indie wave helped a lot in that respect, and though it may be a coincidence, even some of the more recent AAA titles, like The Last of Us, are more creative than the majority of what we got prior to that, IMHO.
Granted, if you're looking for creative titles, I would say you're better off sticking to indie titles. The advantage of AAA games is that they have studios and bigger budgets behind them, and with high production values comes things like exceptional graphics and cinematic cutscenes. However, big studios often like to play it safe, and release titles they think the most people will want to play, and can end up avoiding taking any risks, so we often end up with a lot of AAA titles that aren't that different from what we've played before.
Indie games tend not to have big budgets put into them, and they're not the place to look for pretty graphics and stuff like that. However, indie devs seem to be more inclined to produce games based on what they, themselves would want to play, regardless of what the mainstream market is like at the time. Indie games are a great place to look for originality, if that's what you're craving from modern titles.
I will admit that I haven't played a lot of indie titles, because few have made their way onto ps systems, but that should change in the next year with Sony's new pro-dev initiative. Regardless, my New Years resolution will be to play more indie titles. I personally enjoy games of all shapes and sizes, but I don't know very much about indie games, and I want to change that.
