Apparently, the technology allowing the same media to be displayed in two different screens simultaneously present in the Wii U and its gamepad was patented by another company years before. Retailers selling the Wii U are also being sued. If Nintendo loses, expect them to lose a ton of money. This could affect game budgets for future titles.

Oh my F***ING GOD!! ! This better NOT ruin the new Smash Bros.! I've waited years to play as Mega man in a Smash Bros. game! First, they're being sued over the Wii Balance Board, then the 3DS, and now this?! Is there more? Are you sure there isn't someone else who would like to sue Nintendo? What's next? Go backwards? Okay, so Nintendo might be sued over other patented technology (assuming there is and let's hope not) found in the Wii, or the Gamecube, DS, GBA, GBC, Gameboy, Virtual Boy, N64, SNES, NES, and their own version of a Pong console (yes, they made their own Pong console. Who didn't? There were so many.).

Sorry, I just can't believe this s*** is happening again.

Maybe you should start a fundraiser and donate the proceeds to Nintendo. Call it "Wii Walkers".

Nintendo's a big enough company that they should be able to shrug something like this off. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Wait, so just the idea of a computer using two screens is patented?

That is BS, right now I am using a laptop with my tv screen, and it is totally allowed. The thing is that the Wii-U does not always just have a replicated screen on the game pad, it can be different. It just sounds like this patent owner tried to own a really simple idea, and now accuse Nintendo of taking it which is stupid, it is like if you watched a movie about voice controlled technology, and then suddenly decided that you owned that idea.

You're right. I looked them up. They still have about over a trillion in Yen.

Back when I had more desk space, I actually had a dual monitor setup that gave me more room to work with, rather than just replicating the same image on both displays. It was pretty nice for OpenCanvas.

They are not going to have ¥1 trillion after I sue them for devaluing my original Pong console with their cheap knockoffs.

You are being sarcastic right?

This could be just a classic "Patent Troll" gambit. Someone starts a small company that does nothing more than go around buying up a bunch of cheap, obscure patents, then suing others for alleged infringements.

Several years ago a Patent Troll company bought some early patents regarding streaming video, then went after website owners that offer streaming video. They didn't even have the guts to go after the big boys like Apple and Microsoft. They initially made some bucks by going after medium/large website owners, but got shot down when Microsoft stepped up and offered a blanket indemnity for anyone using its streaming video technology. The Patent Troll got all its claims thrown out in court in 2009.

Having a patent is one thing; suing for infringement is another; but to then win the infringement suit is what counts. Most Patent Trolls lose, it seems.
