Depressed over E3

Hi. I made a topic OMG! about E3 a week away. Sorry to make another related topic. It's over but I feel depressed. I was planning to maybe buy a current gen NEW console and jump on the PS4 Wii U bandwagon but everything that gets me interested is 2015 or longer! I'm a SUPER ZELDA fan but UH! I don't want Skyrim Zelda! People talk about the openness of the original as a jumping point for the new game but I get from point A-point B. I didn't bother with getting 100 little creatures in Link Between Worlds! Why bother upgrading your weapons if doing so means nothing! I play Zelda for the DUNGEONS! and Puzzles in those dungeons! The ice dungeon in Link Between Worlds was one of the BEST Zelda dungeons!

Sequels everywhere too. MGS V UC4 I LOVED MGS 4 and UC trilogy but do I want more of the same? That could be tossed around for Zelda/Mario too but I didn't get a Wii U or SM3DW yet (Have yet to beat 3DL or SMG2 honestly.) Do I want more 3rd party sequels or the usual Mario Zelda sequel stuff????

Not a shooter fan so no COD/Destiny/Halo for me personally. I was expecting OMG! I NEED X system for that ONE new game coming THIS FALL BUT NO EVERYTHING IS 2015! HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO SEE MGS V OR KH 3 OR FFXV? KH3 was a teaser and probably 2016 dare I say IMO 2017 game! but MGS V is 2 E3's down OK ENOUGH RELEASE IT ALREADY! FFXV showed gameplay last E3 surely it's DONE SHEESH!

Sadly nothing I want that's OMG! HAVE TO HAVE! Probably just play my older systems and buy some DLC. If I can afford it maybe buy a NEW system by Xmas but not for anything 2014 more 2015 down the pipeline.

I'm so far out of the modern gaming loop, it's not even funny. If I can afford it, I want to build a new gaming PC some time so that I can catch up on my backlog of games from the last 4-5 years.

I think that looks pretty awesome, and the chance to play as Impa, Zelda and Midna, is pretty cool. And I think it helped convince me to get a Wii U.

Looking forward to Destiny, Star Wars Battlefront and the new Assassin's Creed.

Pretty sure that the new Zelda will get dungeons, (And propably with puzzles in those dungeons.) and that those dungeons will be better that the Skyrim dungeons. (Not that it's hard.)

One of these years I should actually try to go to E3 and see it for myself.

This is part of why I just dont do consoles anymore. This trend is GOING to keep repeating, with ever-greater frequency, as these things keep going. Publishers/developers of anything with a major budget simply cant afford to try new ideas.... and often, something they started on two years ago is taking SO long to make, that they wont have ANY ideas to show off, be they new or repetetive, until THAT one is done.

And once it IS done.... the next idea is likely more of the same. It's the "safe" option. Better get used to sequels, because they're GOING to get more and more and more common as things keep going. The console developers have essentially cornered themselves, and now cannot escape this trend without self-destructing. It's kinda sad, really. I imagine some of them must be a bit... frustrated, at this point.


As it is, E3 so far contained EXACTLY what I thought it would: Not a damn thing I'd care about. My original prediction was right: I have no reason to buy any of these consoles, and likely never will. Which is also kinda sad, really. I rather miss the days when I'd get genuinely excited over the prospect of a new console game to buy for whatever was my favorite device at the time. But that was MANY years ago.

.....or, at least, in CONCEPT I miss those days. In REALITY, game releases that I'm interested in are now so damn frequent that they're almost TOO frequent (every few days or so).... they're just on the PC, not the consoles.


As consoles go though I always at least go back to all of the old ones. Atari 2600/7800 getting alot of use lately. Damn cartridges for the things are everywhere, I really must clean this up one of these days, but..... feh, effort.

Just different tastes. Most of the games in the list I posted will be available on PC and will undoubtedly look better, but getting a PC just to play games I can already play just doesn't seem like a win/win. Again, I'm not aware of any PC exclusive games that interest me as much as any of the games in my list. If you know of any, please let me know of them so I can reconsider my opinion.

If you're looking for major, hyped releases that are exclusive to the PC, they will be few and far between. But even coming from someone who far prefers consoles, nothing can ever match the depth of games on the PC. It's the easiest to develop for, so it's packed with indies. Anything you want, there is a game for. There are fewer restrictions by ratings systems, more room for creativity and innovation, and it leads to fantastic games. You just need to go out and find them.

I know nothing about your taste in video games, but I personally value plot and creativity. There are genres on the PC that cannot exist on consoles. Everything you can think of and then some is available on the PC. Any type of game that has been killed off because it wasn't profitable enough is still alive on the PC. Any retro system or game that didn't get the recognition it deserved is still alive on the PC.

Also, this seems like a good time to bring up one of my favorite games of all time that not many people have played. It's more of a visual novel than a game, so if you're an action fan don't expect much, but if you appreciate a good story than I've got one for you. The game is called "To The Moon". It's about a pair of scientists in the near future who have the technology to delve into and alter peoples' memories. The company they work for is a service that has them delve through the memories of terminally ill patients in order to make their lifelong dreams come true before they die. Or I suppose more accurately make them think that they did. I don't want to say too much about it, but I will mention that I tend to be a stereotypical unemotive aspie, and this game made me cry for hours. It was the third time in my non infant life that I cried. If you're looking for one of the best stories you'll ever play, I highly recommend it. It's available on Steam, I believe. It's in my top five favorite games of all time. Probably along with Super Mario RPG, Jet Set Radio, Persona 4, and Day of the Tentacle. Odd mix, that.

And therein lies the biggest and most annoying problem with PC gaming in general: The advertising, or lack of it. "Major" releases actually are pretty common though, actually. The difference is that the "hype" tends to take a different form.

Games that I can think of (and own) that are PC-exclusive and excellent? Hundreds. And I mean that literally. I'm an impulse buyer who buys things FREQUENTLY (every few days or so), and I've no practical spending limit most of the time.... and I only buy what I'm absolutely certain I'll like, for whatever reason it might be that I'll like it. I've too many games to count on here, and it's very, very rare (hasnt happened in over a year) that I buy something and find it to actually be kinda bad. The selection of games on PC utterly dwarfs that of consoles, and the consoles can never catch up.... period. There's just too many.

But as I said, the advertising.... on consoles, the games come to you. The publishers will do anything, absolutely anything, to make you aware of what they're selling. On PC? Doesnt happen. Only for the not-PC-exclusive games, or the most gigantic of the PC-exclusive ones (things like Hearthstone, or the recently released WildStar) will you ever see that. Everything else? Typically word of mouth, or something you spot in Youtube videos with someone playing the game, or.... nothing. Some games really dont get advertised much at all. In other words, you need to know where to look beforehand (and no, Steam isnt always the place to look. Even if I end up buying something on there, it's likely I heard about it somewhere else). And if you're new to PC gaming, this can be difficult to learn.


As for suggestions? I cant give any. Why is this? Because my own game list, and definitely my own preferences, tend to differ greatly from most on this particular forum. Almost definitely, things I like will be things you wouldnt like.

Story/plot, for instance. For many here, this is important. For me? Ye gods, no. Do not want. I actively avoid story-based games like the plague. I've developed an extreme loathing for them over the years. There's tons of reasons for this, one being that too much development focus on story and cutscenes (which I hate dramatically more) hurts/lowers the development of the actual gameplay, which is the actual important part. Alot of the "major" games are becoming more and more like movies (I hate movies, all of them), rather than games, which to me is bloody stupid. And really, when I did used to tolerate story-based games, I honestly found that many were just badly written, or just downright stupid (like ANYTHING Square has ever put out). Particularly when compared to the endless books that I tend to read. And really, when I want a story, those are what I go to. For games, I want gameplay.

In addition to that, genres that I like are going to be different from what most here play. Shmups (bullet-hell, usually), roguelikes, city-builders, simulation, turn-based strategy, 4x, mobas, sandbox games (think Minecraft, not something like GTA), MMOs, or major competetive games like World of Tanks (that one though did hit the 360 recently, because.... oh I have no idea). And others. Most of those genres do not even exist on consoles at all, or are so rare that the distinction doesnt matter. Also I tend to gravitate towards games with extreme difficulty, thus the shmups and roguelikes.

Fighting games are the one genre that I use the consoles for.

....that and me writing up a list of games that I think are good would take too bloody long. Too impatient for that.



That's not to say there arent games that WOULD fit your likes/dislikes perfectly. There'd be about a bazillion of them. It's just that *I* do not bother with them.

There were some nice games presented, and sooner or later I will play them, but beside Star Wars Battlefront and Mass Effect there was no "Need it at release!" games.

Dragon Age, Witcher, Civilization will be nice to have, once they are getting cheaper or will be in some Steam sales.

Dont know, what to think of Battlefield 5: Battlefield 4 simply sucked, because of the producers being pressed to release it, with the start of the "next generation" consoles and me and my friends are still playing the third one.

Sadly there were very few european game companies showing their PC games to come, it seems that beside companies that do cross-plattform games, E3 has become mostly a show for console arcade games.

I actually loved E3 this year. All of the big three had something to show. I don't mind delays, because, let's face it, with a backlog like mine, I'm not hurting for games to play. Besides, No Man's Sky is officially my most anticipated showing this year, and it's coming this year. So is the 3DS port of the Ace Attourney Trilogy. I believe Batman Arkham Knights is too. All in all, I'd say it's a solid E3, but I'm glad I went last year instead, when it was filled with big announcements, and MS hate. Nah, I have to give props to MS for taking one of the biggest fiascos of last year, and turning it around like they have. The future is looking bright for all three companies.
