I personally feel as though the level Spawning Vats (Or E2M7) looks very abstract in terms of its design and themes. For example, in one area there is a blood pool in the center with an inverted cross on one of the walls, while in another area there's a small computer complex and a room with silver hallways with electrocuting lights. Basically, it's like this massive clash between Satanic imagery and man-made technology. I personally like it since it just looks so intriguing to the eye, Tom Hall and Sandy Peterson did a good job in making the level.

Here are some screenshots in case anyone wants to see what it looks like:

Agreed. It's kinda one of the things that make it a cool game to me, in my opinion.

Oh yeah, Doom has alot of very well-designed levels.

My favorite in episode 2 is this one:

Ahh, I wish FPS games still played like that. But no, it's all "realism" (with regen over time that heals BULLET WOUNDS in 20 seconds....) and taking cover. And sniping. Bah.

Containment Area was a pretty good level. My favorite levels are generally ones that are a mix between Hellish imagery and Technological locations. Examples include E3M3, Pandemonium and E2M7, Spawning Vats.

And yeah, I have to agree with you about the things with most modern FPSes. While some of them are good, most of them generally seem to follow the Call of Duty/Modern Military or World War lookalike. If only we had more science fiction horror FPSes, I'd love to fire at alien creatures with plasma weaponry.

Sorry to go a bit off topic, but where did you get your copy of Doom?

I got it from an abandon ware site, alongside Doom 2. Though I might attempt ripping the wads from my XBox Live copies.

So are you using an emulator? If so can you give me a link?

I PMed you the links because I want the thread to stay focused on-topic, it's fine, though.

They sell it at Steam, you can get the whole DOOM pack for dirt cheap when it's on sale.

You mean DOSBox? It's a lot easier to use a source port, and some of them have a lot of extra "bells and whistles". Check out ZDOOM.

I use that, alongside GZDoom.

As much as I like to discuss about source ports, I meant for this to be about the abstract designs of E2M7: Spawning Vats, not chitchat about sourceports.

I just finished a playthrough of Doom with the Brutal Doom mod (currently playing Doom II likewise). I think Shores of Hell (and Thy Flesh Consumed as a close second) was my favorite episode for those reasons. They didn't try to make much 'logical' sense in the levels after Knee Deep In The Dead, and it was that much for fun for it.

I might have to set up Chocolate Doom again and fire this level up, or get around to building that 486 box I have the parts sitting in my grandparents' shed for. Doom is just not the same when you can jump or use mouselook, or when the graphics are all shiny and the music is rendered by something other than an OPL3.

That I'll definitely have to agree you on. Levels that don't follow any particular theme but rather just make a giant clusterfudge out of all of them are definitely ones I might like.

Right now, Chocolate Doom would probably be my favorite source port. It adds just enough modern features to be convenient, all while maintaining the look and feel of the original engine, down to the bugs and level limitations. It even has a built in OPL3 emulator for the music, and an interpolation filter that simulates the original 320x200 graphics with a correct aspect ratio.
