New Super Smash
Yes, this, FINALLY, it came out. FINALLY.
The 8-way Smash I personally dont really care about... seems to devolve way too quickly into random button-mashing (which I find boring) as most stages are too cramped for it, and those few that are large enough just lead to the camera zooming out WAAAAAYYYYYYYYY too far.
Everything else though.... ahhh, it's glorious, it is. I say this both as a fan of the series and a fan of fighting games in general.
I could do without the Dr. Wily stage though (fight interrupted much too often by the big yellow guy that takes a million years to go away and hogs the entire level while he's there) or that new Donkey Kong one with the alternate bit way off in the background (I'm nearsighted enough as it is...sigh)
Still, whether I'm playing it with items and stuff on, or playing it in the less-interesting flat/itemless way (which I only do when required, as it's just not as interesting to me regardless of my skill overall), it's bloody great as a whole. Fantastic game so far.
I mostly love it....however, it's so hard in a largely cheap & frustrating way that it's making me suicidal. Plus, there's so much reused assets from Brawl ( seriously, they practically dumped Brawl's OST into the new game and added more to it ) and a lot of redundant material ( do we really need 5 versions of the DK Jungle theme? or 4 versions of Green Greens? ) not to mention the trophies shared with the 3DS version have the exact same text which feels lazy to me....
Is there a power save device for Wii U yet? I'll need one for this game, the challenges are IMPOSSIBLE.....the trophies & music are my main source of enjoyment in Smash yet knowing I can't do the obnoxious bullcrap Sakurai in his infinite trollness requires in order to unlock songs & trophies makes me feel like I didn't get a complete game ![]()
That said though, still very proud of myself for somehow beating Classic 9.0 on the 3DS Smash with a custom Link ( who I was BARELY able to beat 5.5 with on Wii U ) thereby leaving only the bs RNG for the last 30 give or take custom moves and around 10 hats for 100% on 3DS.

Yeah, that's what I've heard about it too.
I personally have already lost interest entirely in the single-player stuff, which is typical with fighting games to me. Hell, with other fighting games, which I tend to play only with friends, or at events, I'll buy the game, and just take it over to their house and leave it there, because it'll never, ever get used at my place.
THIS one though bothers me way more than those. Why? Because it throws all this cool-sounding stuff at you, all these custom moves and equipment and Mii items.... and that'd be great, if you EVER GOT TO USE THEM. Hint: You dont.
Even in the godawful "for fun" mode online (2 minute time mode ONLY with smash balls active, argh argh argh.... dont want.... hate "time mode" so much, and there are no other options), NONE of that is usable, which brings up the question of why any of it exists. Hell, Miis in their entirety are pointless because they cant even be selected. And of course, at any event revolving around the game, it's pretty much guaranteed that none of this will be allowed.
As such, yeah.... not seeing the point of continuing with the single-player stuff. The characters will all unlock through normal smash matches with friends (or you can just cheese them into unlocking with that), and... that's all there is to get, really. The trophies I dont really care about.
I'd found the previous versions of the game to be pretty much the same way... single player for learning the characters, and then done with it forever, because it got pointless.
"For Glory" mode online is.... okay, I guess... but I like the series for the chaos of it, and that mode has none whatsoever. Nothing to do with any lack of skill here either... typically I'm extremely good at fighting games, and this series is no exception. But I'm bored of this mode after just a few matches.
So.... hmm. Not AS good as I'd first said the game was. Still pretty darn great, but with so much neat stuff that cant be used, which rather hurts it alot in my opinion.
As best I can tell, the online experience is pretty much the same.
Most of the time for either game, I encounter no lag or anything like that. Every now and then though... you get a match where it just CHUGS. Which can be annoying...
Okay, so, some more time with the game here.... as is typical for me, my opinions on things in games tend to change alot as I get more and more time with them. It takes quite awhile for me to decide on a "final" opinion.
The equipment and such in the game.... maybe not so pointless. The single-player stuff, the more I mess with it, has more value than I thought, as unlike the previous games, the AI isnt totally braindead, and on top of that, the game tends to give conditions for many fights that really tilt the odds against you. Like the Crazy Hand missions... you'll want all the help you can get with those. Or the main "classic" mode, which is simple, but can be amazingly difficult. Expect to lose in that one, possibly often, depending on the difficulty level you choose. Again, you'll want all the help you can get.
In addition to this, I went and bought 3 Amiibo figures to try them out, after hearing some interesting things about them. The AI that these use.... is interesting. Very interesting. They start out weak and sad, unable to do very much against you or against anyone. The more you fight them though, the more they learn, and what they learn and how they use it is dependant on YOUR fighting style. So you'll end up with an Amiibo character that'll fight very differently than that same character bought and trained by a friend, and such as that. The more they learn, the nastier they get. The AI for these can actually go REALLY far. They'll learn how to use all of their normal moves and specials, how to dodge and what to do with the shield, combos, and they'll even learn how to make use of items that show up, including proper use of the Final Smash. You can also increase their stats by feeding them unnecessary equipment, and they'll also increase as the thing levels up (up to level 50). It's sorta expected that if you're fighting these, you're using some equipment and such of your own, though you dont have to.
I also continue with online mode.... "for fun" is still kinda irritating with the accursed time mode. For Glory is.... hmmm. Well, as is typical for fighting games, you'll tend to see certain characters over and over and over and over and over and over. You know.... the "tiers" and all of that crap, where everyone chooses characters based entirely around that. The Fire Emblem characters... I hate them all... are the most common, because swords. Of course, to me the tiers only mean so much. In other fighting games, I will often choose whoever is the lowest on the list, to go up against the high ones, just to make a point, and chances are I"m the one winning. I'm going for the idea of doing the same in this version of Smash. My best character by far is Bowser, and I'll just say that he's not exactly losing very often. And some players just dont seem to have a clue as to what to do against heavy characters (and he's the heaviest in the game), particularly when that heavy character is capable of extremely sudden and fast attacks, such as Bowser's Whirling Fortress, which I've found to be an amazingly effective attack, among others, regardless of mode; works well 1-on-1, works well in a 4 player match also, as it can hit all 3 opponents at once very easily.
That's not to say that NOBODY uses other characters than the high-tier group, but still, you'll see the high ones way, way too often.
Also the boss fight against the Hands can be.... annoying. Particularly if Master Core shows up... I'm not exactly sure just what conditions cause Crazy Hand to transform into that horrible thing, but it happens OFTEN for me.

Master Core will ALWAYS appear on intensity 5.1 and up in Classic mode, with additional forms added as the difficulty increases ( initially just the swords and the clone before the core itself...next higher setting triggers the beast form, next up adds the giant humanoid form and finally on Wii U, at 8.0+ iirc, you get the Master Fortress ).

I've got the 3DS version. It's pretty awesome, though I wish they would write better netcode for it. For some reason, most of the people I end up playing against online have Japanese names. I don't know if they're actually from Japan or if it's just become a trend for people to put kana in their screen names, but the idea of being able to play a Smash game with people on the other side of the world is pretty sweet. ![]()
I know Brawl had online play as well, but by the time I tried it, it was already dead, so this is pretty much the first one I've played much online.
Anyway, my main is Toon Link, because I mained Link on the previous games and memorized his moveset pretty well, but I wanted to play as someone who was lighter and faster. It took some getting used to, not having as much weight and not being able to soak up as much damage, but now I'm getting the hang of playing as him, and I'm doing not too badly.
I would main Fox as well, as I kicked ass with him on Melee, but they really seem to have nerfed him for this one, even more so than they did for Brawl. Actually, if there's only one complaint I have about this Smash aside from the netcode, it's the fact that a lot of the character balance has been really screwed up. There are some characters that just really, really, need to be nerfed, particularly Palutena and Rosalina, as well as a few characters that could use a healthy power boost.

Brawl's online was pretty much dead in the water as soon as it landed for many people. The game was just so absurdly laggy, as was pretty much everything played over the Wii's network. I remember I used to work at a place selling games and related things around that time, and one thing we were always telling customers, in the spirit of honesty, was to NOT expect anything resembling real online play from the Wii. It just never happened for many players. Or I guess I should say, happened so rarely for most players that it wasnt worth it. Many gave up quick, others didnt bother. I had been pretty interested to play Brawl over the Net myself, particularly as my connection has always been very good, but.... yeah, it wasnt happening.
As for the 3DS version's connection, it seemed fine when I messed with it. Though having gotten the Wii U version I havent touched the 3DS one in awhile.
As for character balance, I havent seen much in the way of real problems there. High "tier" characters get overused, which actually makes them easier to take down (extreme amounts of practice against them due to number of players using them, in addition to increasingly predictable tactics... same thing I see in every fighting game, really, and it doesnt work in the other guy's favor). The only character that outright annoys me is Little Mac. Not in a "he's so OP!! !" way, more in a "I just hate his moveset, must stomp him harder than any other possible opposing character". ....that and the Many Marths. Ugh. Tired of Marth and his clones. Really, really tired of them. Usually not too tough to beat, but just.... dull, really. There's just too much of them.
I've been mostly using Bowser myself, because Bowser. He does his job quite well. I'll likely learn pretty much every character to some degree, as I usually do with fighting games.
My only issue with the online stuff remains the simple fact that there's just not enough options. I can either play "for glory", which while challenging gets boring alot faster than I'd like, or "for fun", with the crappy time mode ALWAYS on, as well as the Smash Ball, the one and only item I dont like (I can tolerate it though at least, but it's still annoying: I dont care about the attacks it gives, I just dont like how all the action stops so everyone can chase the accursed thing).

I generally prefer playing "for glory" because it has a one-on-one mode, it lags a LOT less, and there aren't any annoying environmental hazards like autoscrolling. It just feels a lot more "fair", and it makes it easier for me to unleash my skills. And I'm speaking as someone who used to detest the tournament players who took Smash way too seriously.
"For fun" would be much better if it had more options, and if the netcode were improved to better handle dynamic stages with multiple players. Two-minute matches are too restricting; I'd like to have the option of going into a 5 or even 10 minute match. A "casual" dueling mode with items and dynamic stages enabled would be nice too.
New Super Smash is such a strange case, in that it has some glaring issues, but it's still a really solid, fun game. Since the 3DS and the Wii U can actually handle DLC somewhat acceptably, I think it would be awesome if Nintendo released an update that added some extra modes. Hell, they could do it as an expansion pack, and I would still buy it. Just as long as they don't go the route of nickel-and-diming with tons of microtransactions; one big expansion should be enough, like it was in the good old days. ![]()

Yeah, everyone says the same thing about "fair" with the one-on-one mode. In my case though, I get more satisfaction, and more reason to actually use more skill than usual (normally I"m not entirely focused, as in fighting games it's very rare that I have to be), if I'm taking down a strong opponent who also happens to be holding a hammer or something. Typically though matches on varied stages and with items I still do as one-on-one matches, so the camera isnt bouncing all over the place. Though more players is fine too. Whatever keeps it interesting. Of course part of it though is that I've played so damn many fighters, and most of them have pretty much the same basics, that it's nice to see something DIFFERENT out of Smash, but... with that rule set, it loses that.
Whatever the case though, I'm just glad to see people playing more of one of these that ISNT Melee. Thanks to the community, I ended up utterly loathing that particular game. "Fox only" indeed. Ugh. It's extremely rare that I ever develop dislike or outright hatred for a game I once enjoyed, but that one managed it. Brawl though got so many complaints from those dolts that so many just stopped playing it, and bloody Melee hung around. Seen it at so many conventions now, ugh. I like the series alot, but I ended up pretty much never playing any of it at events because it was always that version. And I've had enough of the cast of that game. You know, Fox, Falco, Fox, Fox, Falco, Captain Falcon, Falco, Falco, and Fox. Falcon is fine mostly, but I got so tired of Fox and Falco that they're pretty much the only characters I now refuse to use at all, and that was the case in Brawl too: Learned and used everyone but them.
And yeah, I agree, 2 minute matches are WAY too restricting. Particularly for time mode. It comes down to sudden death so freaking often, because there's no time available to get varied amounts of KOs and such in. I can guess why they did it though: Short matches = less chance of leavers per match. And leavers are the bane of any online competetive game. Though that doesnt make it suck less, feh.

Well it's a good thing Smash can be a game of skill, or just one any ole' joe gamer like myself can just button mash to find the best combinations.
I never liked timed matches, not since the original smash. Stock matches all the way, I tend to actually whine and complain any time anyone wants to do a timed match.
I was almost always strictly falco, never fox, but I did get the hang of wolf in brawl. If I wasn't Falco, I was shiek, and if I wasn't shiek then I was Roy/Ike. Later on though I began to mess around and actually got good with just about every character on Brawl. Three of my new favs.: are the new Shiek, causefinally made her/him {cause Zelda's a cross-dresser...} a different character!, Charazard cause he's well fast now... but I have no complaints cause he should be fast, and Robin who is essentially a close range Lucas.
All in all it's been about two weeks since I last got to play the new Smash at a friends house, and it's still on my mind.

Long days, pleasant nights.
I love both versions of the game.
The 3DS one is a great portable version that makes for a good companion to the Wii U version.
Though if you play the 3DS game on the New 3DS (Japan and AUS), it has near instant load times and allows for Miiverse posting.
It also uses Amiibos as well.
The Wii U version is just oozing charm and perfection...
I do not care for 6-8 player smash, because I find it too disorienting.
I love all the unlockables... So many songs and trophies.
I also own Villager and Link Amiibos... I just love them.
Next up is Zelda next Sunday.
My main characters are:
1) Ike
2) Villager
3) Zelda
4) Shulk
....
My favorite levels:
1) Pac-man stage - the one with in maze with the pellets (3DS)
2) Dr. Willy's stage, I love detonating the yellow guy
3) Duck hunt stage - if you kill the ducks, they will drop items (Wii U)
3) The new FE stage (Wii U)
4) The Angry Mom stage (Wii U)
5) Nintendogs stage (3DS)
6) Sonic Lost Worlds stage (Wii U)
7) Star fox Armada stage (Wii U)
The Miiverse stage - when it comes out (Wii U)
9) Pokemon stage (Wii U)
10) Pokemon stage (3DS)
Ohh so much to like, not enough good moods to enjoy it all (Haven't played in 3 days)
Also make sure to register both versions on Club Nintendo before mid January, to ensure you get Mewtwo DLC and the Soundtrack.

Yeah, totally agreed on the 8-way smash and such. It really DOES get disorienting. Big levels zoom out too far... and small ones cram too many people in, and it can be easy to lose track of where you are! Granted, those can be REALLY funny when there's explosions and things going off, but still. 4 players or less for me, thanks.
And I didnt know that about the Duck Hunt stage, hadnt thought to attack the ducks, I'll have to try that.
Agreed also with the 3DS Pac-Man level.
My favorite on the Wii U is probably the Wrecking Crew one. I loved the hell outta that game as a kid, a very overlooked game that most people dont know exists (and it stars Mario and Luigi, too), and that level really captured it perfectly. Even those horrible, game-ending barrels are there... they just dont force you to reset the game in Smash like they did in Wrecking Crew! It's difficult to trap an opponent in one of those, but it's sooooo worth it to do that.
For the most part though I like pretty much all of the stages, except maybe that dual-layer Donkey Kong one. it's just too hard to see what's going on when you're in the back layer...
Havent played it in a week or so myself, after my seemingly-indestructible-for-3-years-or-so controller decided that NOW was a super duper time to finally break (ARGH). It was a Nyko brand Classic controller for the Wii, and will be irritating to replace. It was specifically good because it doesnt make my hand cramp up with awkward shape and shoulder button positions like the other controllers can (normal Classic, and the Pro, I tried those, and... yeah, not gonna work). Might be able to finally deal with it today though.
