I still remember how I was freaked out when I played Doom for the first time in 1993. I could watch someone play with no problem but I just couldn't handle it very well myself perhaps because too much was happening at once. Same goes for Warcraft and CnC. I have spent my youth playing turn based Rpgs. Now that I am much older I've gotten used to it but still suck at it real bad. Still try to hide in a corner when things gets too much. I don't even dare to play things online, because I am sure I will be very bad.

I love fallout though. V.A.T.S. make it easier for me. And it releases my stress when I pop up enemies head. not very good with skyrim...

Ehhh...

I'm not too fond of... almost every single modern trend in the FPS genre these days, with very, VERY rare exceptions. I liked games like Doom, which were fast paced with stuff flying everywhere and you had to actually DODGE things... these days, it's all what I call "hide-n-snipe", which puts me to sleep.

Every now and then I'll try the genre again, or maybe someone I know will coerce me into playing one with them for awhile by not shutting the hell up about it, and the result is always the same: I get more and more impatient unti my patience finally breaks, at which point I *will* charge at.... everything, which is what I do in Doom. Cover-based shooter? DONT CARE, CHAAAAAARGE!! !!"

So yeah.... not any good at these.

I have to avoid games where I have to constantly defend myself against rapidly incoming attacks. My reaction time is just too slow, and I generally freak out whenever something is rapidly approaching me, e.g. baseballs. I am fine with being shot at, but a character charging at me causes panic. I still shudder when I think of a Halo 4 Stealth Elite charging at me with an Energy Sword. 8O

That, along with the fact that I enjoy shooting IRL, means I do best when sniping or attacking a defended position, especially when I can use stealth. Considering all of that, the games I most enjoy are:

Destiny - headshots can be a rewarding stress reliever for me.

Elite Sniper series - full time sniping and a WW2 story line. Nice.

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - love the berserk darts. So much fun to watch enemies turn on and kill each other.

Skyrim - though I went a bit overboard in supercharging my weapons and armor. I have to admit that when I'm in a bad mood it can feel good to take out anything with a single arrow or sword strike. :D

I enjoy FPS, but am not especially good at them. I dislike repetitive first-person stealth kills and jabbering pop-up windows.

I'm somewhat decent. I play Call of Duty every now and then, but I get bored of aiming and pressing the R2 button on the controller.

Yes and no. I beat Ultimate Doom on "ultra violence" difficulty using only a keyboard, and I'm OK at Titanfall on PC, but playing any of the Call of Duty games on console, I get my ass handed to me. I'm also not that great at Counter Strike, or any of the Quake games, or TF2, but sometimes I have lucky days with that one.

I wouldn't go so far as to say FPS is my favorite genre, but it's pretty high up there. I just tend to suck at them, mainly because I have a hard time spotting and hiding from enemies, and my reflexes aren't that great either. The only reason I was able to beat Doom was because of excessive savescumming, as well as rather predictable enemy behavior, and the fact that most of the higher level enemies use projectile attacks instead of hitscanning. Exploiting bugs like straferunning, horizontal rocket jumping, and monster infighting helped a lot too.

Another thing, it seems a lot of modern FPSs are based around camping excessively, and that is something I get bored of very quickly. I mean, I like the challenge of sniping, but I can't stand staying in one place for too long, I usually prefer just running around with guns blazing.

I haven't played a competitive online FPS in about five years, but I believe I've done pretty well with them in the past. I'm not one who'd tend to get MVP grade kill counts, but that's partially because I prefered playing supporting roles in team based modes. I mostly find shooters to be catalysts for socializing though, so I have very limited interest in them when not able to play them(competitive multiplayer or story mode) with at least one friend. I do miss Rainbow Six and Borderlands, but those just aren't the same when played alone.

I played quite a few FPS games in the early years of the PS1 - Doom, Final Doom, Duke Nukem, Exhumed, Alien Trilogy, Disruptor, Descent, Medal Of Honor and MOH Underground.

A couple of years ago I acquired a PS2 and later an XBOX, and got the bug again. Since then I've completed MOH Frontline, COD Finest Hour, Half Life, Half Life 2, Red Faction, Return To Castle Wolfenstein and am currently about half way through Halo, Combat Evolved.

Needless to say I really love these games, and usually play them on the 'normal' or second-hardest difficulty level so there's always a future replay challenge.

One thing I noticed was that on earlier games which used analogue sticks for movement, it was possible to have forward and backward movement plus turning left or right on one stick, and sideways strafing on the other (as in the MOH 'Classic' control setup for example). At some point, as with Halo, COD and just about everything else, back-and forward and strafe were put on the same stick, with no option to change - I found this really difficult to adapt to at first, a bit like trying to write left-handed for a right-hander.

Something I can't understand is how on user reviews (such as those on Gamefaqs), even people who rate these games highly tend to say they have completed them in 10-12 hours. Including restarts, it usually takes me more like 50 hours, and I reckon I'm a pretty competent FPS gamer.

Sounds like you're into the classics. Have you played any of the Quake or Unreal games? They're better on PC, but you can run them on almost any toaster nowadays.

Played an fps once in my life, sucked at it. I think it was at a friend's house in 2009 we were playing mw3. I'd accidently kill myself with grenades and teamkill for fun

Then I 2012 I bought Skyrim and instantly set difficulty on novice, still was scared balls on my first night. Though my last playthrough 3-4 months ago was on normal. Learned to monitor a mage's mana bar.

I've got The Witcher III on release date, playing on normal and I honestly think I'm doing good at it.

Edit: TW3 isn't FPS but still pretty fast-paced and strategic.

I use to be a god on Unreal tournament, when ever me or one of my clan members would enter a server there would usually be a couple people that would be like screw this and leave the server lol. I really miss those days... UT is pretty much dead now, last time i checked like a year ago there were only a small hand full of servers left. Never really been good at FPS like CoD but some of the classics like UT and Quake i was really good at.

My first introduction to FPS was through Halo 2, and while I do agree that the genre has been milked for all it's worth, I do still enjoy playing an FPS every once and a while. I've fallen out of love with military shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield though, because they're kind of all the same, and really don't have anything interesting to me outside of the gameplay, so I mostly go to Halo if I'm in the mood for an FPS. I'm not the best, but I'm trying to get better. I play online sporadically, and for the most part I enjoy it, the only thing that really irritates me is when other players abuse cheap tactics to win, rather than playing for fun, because that's what a game should be - fun.

I'm pretty good at them offline or coop, and sometimes against my friends (depending on the game), but I couldn't play competitively or anything like that; it relies too much on exploits, and I think cheating is pretty lame.

There was a while around late 2011-early/mid 2012 where I remember there were a surprising number of people still playing UT99 online, although none of it involved standard gametypes. Even so, I had the chance to play some really cool mods, probably some of the best and most creative I've ever played in an online FPS. One of my favorites was this CTF variant where you could pick up a rocket launcher that would either fire a warhead like the Redeemer, or in its secondary fire mode, the rocket would turn into a miniature fighter jet you could pilot, with machine guns to boot. The coolest part was being able to fly straight at the enemy base, eject from your jet, and have it crash into your opponents killing them in a huge explosion! Usually you'd end up getting caught in the explosion as well, so it was kind of a kamikaze maneuver, but it was still really cool.

These days in the UK (and probably elsewhere) it's possible to buy secondhand PS2 and Xbox games ridiculously cheaply (mostly for about £1), and many PS3 and Xbox 360 games are now only £3-£4. As a result I've built up a stockpile of several dozen old FPS games, some of which I'd never even heard of, for a relatively small outlay. I've yet to play any of these. Examples:

Area 51 (PS2)

Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines (PS2)

Goldeneye: Rogue Agent (PS2)

Brothers In Arms, Road To Hill 30 (PS2)

Unreal 2, The Awakening (Xbox)

Project Snowblind (Xbox)

Star Wars: Republic Commando (Xbox)

Killzone (PS2), Killzone 2 & 3 (PS3)

Can anyone recommend any of these titles as being a 'hidden gem' or at least above average, or perhaps identify which, if any, are real 'clunkers'?
